Judas!: From Forest Hills to the Free Trade Hall: A Historical Overview of the, by Clinton Heylin

In 1966 there was... the sell-out tour to end all tours. Bob Dylan and The Hawks found themselves at the epicenter of a storm of controversy. Their response? To unleash a cavalcade of ferocity from Melbourne to Manchester, from Forest Hills to the Free Trade Hall. For the first time, the full story can now be told from eye-witnesses galore; from timely reports, both mile-wide and spot on; and from the participants themselves. And what better tour guide than Clinton Heylin, the esteemed Dylan biographer and one of the world's leading rock historians. The price of admission? Thirty pieces of silver. The password? Play F***ing Loud!

"FOLK-ROCK. I'VE NEVER SAID THAT WORD." BOB DYLAN.
By Stuart Jefferson
"Go home."
"Get the group off."
"Drop dead." Comments from audience members hearing Dylan "go electric".

As I write this, this book is difficult for Amazon to stock, maybe because it's published in Britain. But if you're interested in the "Dylan goes electric" era of late '65/'66 this is worth tracking down. This is the only book to deal so extensively with the '66 concerts since the book "The Ghost of Electricity" published any years ago.

"Oh what a storm blew up when Dylan came to town! They booed. They said things (mostly unprintable)." Newspaper article, Dublin, Ireland.

Heylin, long known for his writing on Dylan, has put together a chronological history of that period when Dylan shocked folk purist's ideals and excited others (like me) who heard a new and different excitement when Dylan strapped on an electric guitar. The book begins in Sept. of '65 at the Newport festival and follows Dylan through his concerts in '66, which were recently released in a nifty box set.

"One could only be sorry that this fine songwriter and impressive artist ever discovered rock." local journalist, Brisbane, Australia.

Heylin has woven into his story many period first person accounts which (for me at least) is the real meat of the story. Heylin's research has opened up that whole period and he's put together both an interesting and informative look into Dylan, the music, and the times back then, adding some good depth to the story surrounding this pivotal year in music. Also included are occasional period interviews with Dylan by the press, pieces from various papers and magazines, and other period ephemera. There's two sections of b&w photos--but no captions--which would've helped place the photos into the timeline. There's also a list of notes and sources (which are worth reading), but no index.

This is an in depth look at a period of time when Dylan truly shocked his fans and when the whole folk tradition was shaken by his abandonment of traditional folk trappings of acoustic guitar and "message" songs that helped guide and assure so many people (yes, it's true, I was there) during that era of unrest. Anyone interested in Dylan's music, the effect it had on people, and a deep look at details surrounding that period of concerts should check out this book if they can acquire a copy. Dylan took some care in assuring his concerts would be recorded--including a live version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" from a Liverpool concert as a 'B' side of a single (described by Record Mirror as "probably the worst thing by Bob on record.") with "I Want You" as the 'A' side. This book lays out that time and helps get all of us back into that year of musical turmoil--something hard to really understand if you weren't around then. But this book will open up an shine some light on what went on for both those who remember those times, and for those who weren't around back then and want to know and understand better what it was all about.

"There was a shouting battle between the folk-song purists...and the beat fans." newspaper article, Manchester, Eng.

"You never acknowledged us or said thank you." news article, Paris, France.

"What you're hearing is just songs. You're not hearing anything else but words and sounds." Bob Dylan, Albert Hall concert, England.
