  Not too shabby.

  This is a neat little book, despite the name 'Black & Decker', which I stay away from like the plague.
  
  As a girl, I know very little on carpentry in general. This isn't a bad book to have to give you a starting point and some little projects to put together to gauge yourself. I always liked the idea of fixing up the house--but liking the idea, and being able to ACTUALLY DO IT are totally different things. So, my first project I started with was the workbench plan, and modified it a bit to suit my needs, just to see if I had a knack for this kind of thing. I can't even begin to say how much I like the plan for the workbench. It ends up making a very sturdy table. (I added locking wheels to the bottom of mine, and used 2 sheets of 3/4" MDF board as the top instead of plywood.)
  
  This book obviously isn't meant for someone who already knows it all. As the title says, 'Carpentry for Homeowners', not 'Carpentry for Carpenters'. So, if you've got some projects you want to try out, this is certainly a nice addition to your library--even if you're just a tad bit interested. The first 100 pages are just telling you what certain tools are, what they're used for, and how to use them. Kind of basic stuff, but for me, it was a good start.
  
  One thing I don't like about the book is that it's glue-bound. What I mean by that is that it's glued to the cover and all that, and so it has a tendency to flop closed on you. Hardly functional if you're trying to learn WHAT to do WHILE doing it. The easiest way to fix this is to take it to your local Kinko's, or somewhere else that binds books, and have them chop the spine off, laminate the covers, and coil bind it for you. (Be ready to pay ~$12 for this, though) Now, you have a functional book you can leave open without having to weigh it down!

  I bought this book for a garage project of mine and the decent reviews it had. I must say the reviews are well deserved. This book offers plenty of photos and well explained "how-to" guide lines. Detailed explanation with photos of all the tools you'll need for your project. I can now do my projects with confidence considering I am a novice at carpentry. Excellent choice for the novist.

Surprising and Lasting

At university I got stuck one year with an empty slot and took, of all things, a philosophy class. It surprised me by being one of the most memorable classes I ever had. Magister Ludi was one of the assigned books and when I started reading it I knew I would hate it. Fooled me. I gradually moved into that world and ended up miserable to have to leave it. It's lyrical and though provoking. My favorite part is a poem added at the end, "Stages." Because of the translation from German the language of the poem is a bit florid, but the thoughts are a lesson about very important things.

GARTH WILLIAMS (1912-1996) is known for his realistic yet highly expressive animal characters. His unique style has brought to life some of the best-loved children's books of the 20th century, including E. B. White's Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, and the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. He illustrated many timeless Golden Books, among them Baby Farm Animals, Mister Dog, The Friendly Book, The Sailor Dog, The Giant Golden Book of Elves and Fairies, and The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Mouse.

This is not an accurate reprint

I don't know if Garth Williams re-drew his illustrations for this reprint, but the cover is obviously different from the original. The line quality is much spikier, the characters' facial expressions are more cartoony, and details have been changed, such as the removal of the little toy car at the bottom center which used to be part of the image. The changes are easy to see if you compare to the picture of the 1980's reprint posted by William G. Elliott.

If publishers are going to change illustrations, they should call the book a "reinterpretation" or "revised version", rather than a "reprint", which implies that there have been no changes. The different cover makes me wonder what else has been changed in this version of the book. Maybe the inside pictures and text are all the same, but it's impossible to tell from the book's Amazon page.

Alliterative, repetitive, and entertaining text

The Friendly Book is the reprint of a "Big Little Golden Book" classic written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Garth Williams. Of special note is the way the alliterative, repetitive, and entertaining text of The Friendly Book is so useful in helping children ages 2 to 5 to simultaneously built vocabulary and reading skills. Also very highly recommended are two other newly reprinted Gold Books classics: K. & B. Jackson and Gustaf Tenggren's The Saggy Baggy Elephant (0375-825908, ...) and Tibor Gergely's The Great Big Fire Engine (0307103218,...).

Best Book Ever!

I LOVED this book as a child. The pictures by Garth Williams are so lovingly rendered. I can recall each image with amazing detail (obviously I poured over this book often!).
Since it's been out of print, I would search used book stores - pawing through their inevitable stack of old Golden Books. I found one several years ago in college that I promptly sent to my then toddler sister. I continued to look for another copy to keep for my own children someday. Alas, to no avail.
Last year a treasury of Garth Williams illustrated books was released, and I promptly bought a copy for my 1-year old daughter. I'm thrilled that the original book has been re-released - better for small hands. I strongly recommend this book for young children (birth & up). You will not be disappointed!

About the Author

Maggie Macnab has been recognized as an innovative visual communicator for over three decades. She teaches design theory at the University of New Mexico, The Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe Community College, and Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and is past president of the Communication Artists of New Mexico. Macnab speaks at conferences (she's a two-time speaker for TEDx), guest lectures and gives workshops for schools and groups, and consults on developing cohesively strategic and creative identities with clients. Macnab is the author of Design by Nature (Peachpit Press, 2012), which was the recipient of the 2012 New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for Non-Fiction. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This is an absolutely must have for all logo designers aspiring to take their craft to the next level and to those like me, who needed insight for my business logo.

I was thrilled at the level of talent, attention to detail, and the energy she placed into her work. Maggie has a way of explaining so many elements of principle to its simplest form. Her insight into logos, identity, and branding were of pure passion for what she does.

My personal favorite sections were understanding the concepts of shapes and the many logo types.

Above all, I am so pleased this DVD exceeded my expectations. Designing Effective Logos is the best!
