From Emperor to Citizen: The Autobiography of Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi, by Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi

From Emperor to Citizen is the autobiography of Pu Yi, the man who was the last emperor of China. A unique memoir of the first half of the 20th century as seen through the eyes of one born to be an absolute monarch, the book begins with the author's vivid account of the last, decadent days of the Ching Dynasty, and closes with an introspective self-portrait of the last Ching emperor transformed into a retiring scholar and citizen of the People's Republic of China.

In detailing the events of the fifty years between his ascension to the throne and the final period of his life as a quiet-living resident of Beijing. Pu Yi reveals himself to be first and foremost a survivor, caught up in the torrent of global power struggles and world conflict that played itself out on the Asian continent through many decades of violence and upheaval.

This firsthand description of the dramatic events of Pu Yi's life was the basis for the internationally acclaimed 1987 Bernardo Bertolucci film The Last Emperor which was named Best Picture of the Year by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. From Emperor to Citizen readily lends itself to cinematic adaptation as a personal narrative of continuously significant and revealing episodes.

Becoming emperor and then forced to abdicate with the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911, all before he is seven continues to live in Forbidden City for another decade still treated as the Son of Heaven by the moribund Ching court, but in reality a virtual prisoner, with little genuine human contact apart from his beloved nurse Mrs. Wang, his teacher Chen Pao-shen and his English tutor Reginald Johnston.

When at the age of nineteen Pu Yi is finally forced to vacate his isolated existence within the Forbidden City, he begins his long odyssey as the dependent of the occupying imperial Japanese regime, first in Tientsin, and eventually installed as "emperor" of the Japanese puppet state styled Manchukuo in China's northeast provinces. With the defeat of Japan and the end of the Second World War, Pu Yi faces a very uncertain future as he is shunted off to Russia for five years before returning to a new China transformed by revolution, where he is confined in the Fushun War Criminal Prison. Here he undergoes several years of rehabilitation, "learning how to become a human being," as he calls it, before receiving an official pardon and being allowed to finally live as an ordinary citizen of Beijing.

This autobiography is the culmination of a unique and remarkable life, told simply, directly and frankly by a man whose circumstances and experiences were like no other.

Should Be Required Reading

Although I haven't yet finished reading this book, I'm far enough into it to say that it is a remarkable text, and I know that the rest of the story will be every bit as engrossing as what I've read to this point. If you are thinking of visiting Beijing--or anywhere in China, for that matter--you owe it to yourself to read this book before you go. It will make sense of things that will otherwise utterly puzzle and perplex you while you are there. And will add such texture and depth to your experience!

In the former emperor's own words with superb English translation, Pu Yi's autobiography is the authentic voice of China. He did a remarkable thing even recognizing the importance of telling the story of the last days of imperialist China from the perspective of the Palace and in opening to the world a view and understanding of an exclusive existence that, up until his telling, had been carefully hidden and protected for thousands of years from anyone outside the Forbidden City.

The last of the Chinese dynastic emperors, Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi tells his story with a humility and detachment that leads the reader inside the way imperial people thought, behaved and ruled. He tells about his relationships with his attendants, consorts, tutors and the new leaders in China with painstaking attention to accuracy and detail. He describes the upheaval attendant to the establishment of the Republic of China, his relationships between the country and its leaders both old and new, and his awakening as a human being and not the god that he was trained from age two to believe that he was.

The book itself was printed in Beijing and is an authentic piece of Chinese craftsmanship. The binding is superb, and it's the first book with a satin ribbon bookmark that I've picked up in decades(excluding the Bible, of course).

I spent three months in China and visited the Imperial Palace just before my return to the USA. I knew practically nothing of what I saw but took many pictures which only raised questions. I had a thousand of them I needed answers for by the end of the tour. My sister and I went through the Imperial Palace without a guide, but I overheard bits and pieces of conversation that piqued my curiosity and gave me reason to wonder about things I'd otherwise have walked right past without a second thought.

This book fills in a lot of blanks and makes an already fascinating country take on much deeper meaning. And it adds the third dimension that was missing from my experience at the Forbidden City. It fills the empty courtyards with eunochs, consorts, imperial guards, cooks, musicians and the animals that lived inside those walls. It returns sounds to an imperial palace gone silent, save for the quiet voices of the overwhelmingly Chinese tourists who come to see the place where their former leaders lived and ruled.

If the rest of the story is told in the same quiet, understated way, it will make bearable the awfulness of Pu Yi's personal experiences following his expulsion from the Imperial Palace at age 19 and will keep me from weeping for the millions of Chinese people who suffered and died during the decades of civil war, revolution and utter instability that followed.

Pardon me, please, I have a book to finish reading!

In his own words: The Last Emperor of China
By James W. Taylor
Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, writes a fine autobiography providing insights and commentary as to his life inside and eventually outside of the Imperial Palace, known as the "Forbidden City." He is frank and seemingly honest about what went on inside of the palace and how he felt about his peculiar situation: being an Emperor in a new Republic and then an abdicated Emperor aligned with the Japanese in Manchuria and finally, a prisoner of the People's 'new China' under Chairman Mao. One should read this book for a candid and straight forward look into the tragic personal life of Pu Yi and the history of the Ching dynasty and its last hereditary leader.

By Angie Koh
I have been unable to find this book from all bookstores in my city. I bought the Part 2 and was very intrigue to hear of this former emperor and feudal China. I am so very happy to be able to find it in Amazon.com after a friend recommended this website. Thank you, Amazon.com for making it happen. Now I can just relax on a sofa, with a mug of hot coffee and this book. Bliss!
