Benjamin C. Alamar is a professor of sport management at Menlo College and a sports analytics consultant/researcher. He has consulted with a variety of teams in the NFL and NBA, including five seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and with a variety of companies in sports analytics. He has published numerous research studies in sports analytics and has written on sports analytics for outlets such as ESPN, Analytics Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal. Additionally, Alamar is the founding editor of the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports, the first peer-reviewed academic journal for research in sports analytics.

Dean Oliver is the director of Production Analytics at ESPN, leading the development of sports analytics for the network. He worked for seven years in the NBA with the front offices of the Denver Nuggets and Seattle Supersonics, using analytics to improve trades, free agency, the draft, and coaching tactics. The contents of his book, Basketball on Paper, are now used broadly across the NBA. Oliver has a Ph.D. in engineering and has years of experience as an advance scout, collegiate scout, and coach.

Very generic and basic

I expected something else from this book. I was looking for discussions about specific cases of sports analytics impacting decision making and making a difference in the output of a sports agent (be it an athlete, a team, a scout, a sports investment fund). I was looking for discussions about specific KPIs, how they are captured, the reasoning underlying their conception and why they add (or fail to add) value.

Instead, I found the book to be quite generic and basic, containing very little that someone who has any experience as an analyst in any industry would not know.

Also, I felt that the book reads more like a manual, with a very bland narrative and no story telling.

Gameplan & Context Long Overdue

The concept of analytics in sports and the prospect of its ultimate utility resulting in competitive advantage has progressively gained traction at the organizational level in professional sports. However, despite its growing legitimacy, many executives and decision makers have struggled to employ a comprehensive strategy to realize the full potential of an analytics initiative. Many times these efforts are impeded due to the daunting challenge of forming and integrating a complete analytics program that can compliment and support the goals of the organization, which without help can be a massive undertaking that can be discouraging, easily procrastinated, or only partially executed.

Mr. Alamar has done a masterful job in providing those decision makers and fans alike a comprehensive blueprint from which they can gain a contextual understanding of the distinct components that need to be configured to ensure success. I found this book to be extremely through in explaining both the advantage an analytics program can have in an uber competitive setting, but also the role of quality personnel and processes as the prime ingredients of a successful analytic plan. Whether it is the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, or the Champions League, success is always at a premium and sustained winning is usually found in the margins. This book offers a unique resource that competently describes the interaction among leadership, data management, information systems, and predictive analysis required to produce new data in a timely manner for more efficient decision making that ultimately promotes more successful outcomes.

Professor Alamar sets forth a comprehensive, yet easily readable in depth introduction to sports analytics. The book is a perfect mixture of concepts, explanations and stories, which makes the book very enjoyable and addictive (I read it in two days). This is a sport neutral book (only anecdotes and examples are sport specific), which makes the content applicable to all sports. It is a must read for anyone interested in sports, from a decision maker at a team, all the way to the most casual of fans as it is an understandable introduction to a very complex and increasingly influential facet of sports.

Become was the last book in The Awakened Fate series! This was such an exciting read! Full of betrayal, suspense, love, friendship, death, royalty, and secrets. I had to read this book in one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next! I could not put it down.

Chloe, Zeke, and Noah returned to the ocean. Yes, I did say Noah! Let's just say that Chloe's powers are growing more and more each day. Almost everyone in the ocean are their enemies. How do you trust? Who do you trust? Can Zeke and Chloe even trust their parents? Yes, we do meet Chloe's real dad in this book! But that is all I can say! Who he is will shock you! You will have to read the book for yourself to know how their final plan went, along with their final battle! You will also find out who Chloe picks! Yay for love triangles!!

Skye Malone is amazing! I still can't figure out how she created all the creatures she did! They were awesome creatures and characters! Each and every character had their own unique personality and I fell in love with all of them. Not Noah's cousins though. This book wasn't just your average mermaid book. There were actually other creatures hunting mermaids for once, instead of your usual human vs. Mermaid story.

A Great Series.

I have read all the books in this series. The characters were believable and well developed. The language was exquisite and well written. The story was very exciting and contained many elements. There was love, hate, adventure, mystery, suspense. Although there was great attention to detail, there were none of those boring spots where the background is described on page after page. Chloe was a girl with a big problem and supposedly crazy parents. As the story develops, she discovers why they don't want her near the ocean. Turns out there are multiple people who want her dead, in the ocean and on the land. Things are also complicated by her love life. Thankfully, she has great friends to help her and give her advice. In the end, it all works out and the bad guys get their just rewards. It is a great story and I highly recommend it.

Sad but Fantastic

Chloe, Zeke and Noah have come a long way in this final book of the series. Zeke's brother is beyond help, or so it seems. They are hunted by more than one psychotic group and try to find help with Zeke's mother. Little do they know, but she's just as bad. And Chloe finally finds her father. Who knew???

This book has an incredible ending, and I was surprised with it. It's very sad, but nothing else made sense. It's sad but exciting. Zeke will become more as will all of the others who were exposed to the storm and the power emitted from it. Noah is my hero. He will continue to be a bright light in the sky.

Wiring

I like this book a little better than the SA Design book "Automotive Wiring and electrical systems" It shows more step by step instruction on wiring. But like I said in my review for the SA book if you are wiring a whole car from scratch it is not that much help. It has a lot of good info for someone who wants to learn what everything is and how it works but not so much on how to do it yourself.

Fabulous in depth discussion of the cingulate cortex

Starting with the basic neuroanatomy and connectivity, this text builds through functional studies to clinical applications. The four region model is well concieved and laid out. The functional results follow logically, ending with the clinical implications. Forward's first novel gives the concept of the balance between good and evil a most ingenious twist: What if good were so totally triumphant that it became a worse danger than evil, and a band of unemployed evil characters had to go on a desperate quest to find the means of putting the saving bit of evil back into the world? The result of this twist is an almost straightforward quest tale, with numerous well-drawn characters (including a centaur who starts off as a secret agent for good and eventually joins the side of evil), great ingenuity about magic, very creditable world-building, and considerable wit. Although bearing its share of first-novel flaws, it has many more virtues, which include an underlying, serious examination of the good-evil dichotomy that is the basis of so many role-playing games. A Terrific Nonstandard Fantasy

In a twist on the usual fantasy story, Forward's heroes are not classically good-hearted heroes, but instead villians. Including an assassin, an evil sorceress, a greedy thief, and a black knight, the main characters are likable and intriguing. They band together to save the world from destruction by the powers of good.
In the beginning, I found the characters one-dimensional. However, as the story quickly unfolded, I was fascinated to see that both character introspection and interaction developed their personalities to an amazing degree. After that, even minor, short-lived characters managed to grab my attention fully.
There are a number of sly digs at other fantasy works, which make Villians By Necessity an even funnier book if you're well-read in fantasy novels.

Root for the bad guys!

After an all-out war, Good has at last triumphed over Evil. Peace, milk and cookies now reign over all the kingdoms. But something is wrong. The total victory of the forces of Good has created an internal imbalance in the universe and now, unless Evil is raised up to a measure of its former glory, the world will end. It falls upon an assorted group of leftover minor villains and misfits to save the day. Included in this contentious band are: Sam, a bored assassin always clothed in black; Arcie, his vertically-challenged sneakthief sidekick; Valeriana, an embittered sorceress; Kaylana, a Druid priestess; Blackmail, a mute black knight; and Robin, a naive minstrel-centaur who chronicles the villains' deeds. Pursued and harried at every turn by the minions of Good, with a spy lurking in their midst, this bunch of lowlifes must learn to co-exist and then somehow reopen the magically sealed Darkgate and release darkness back into the world. Only the Good die young? Not in this book.

Eve Forward may be the daughter of sci-fi writer Robert L. Forward but this debut novel is more reminiscent of Roger Zelazny's work, in its wit, tone and predisposition to upending themes. She writes with zest and imparts a sense of satiric fun to the epic proceedings. Her oily-haired assassin Sam is an endearing character, never mind that he's technically a bad guy. I fervently hope she puts out more books in the future. I wouldn't mind a bit if she revisits this fantasy universe.

Lastly, this book needs to be re-released and soon. I've looked everywhere for a copy and the lowest price I've found is $38.25 for a paperback from the original printing.
