Forward's first novel gives the concept of the balance between good and evil a most ingenious twist: What if good were so totally triumphant that it became a worse danger than evil, and a band of unemployed evil characters had to go on a desperate quest to find the means of putting the saving bit of evil back into the world? The result of this twist is an almost straightforward quest tale, with numerous well-drawn characters (including a centaur who starts off as a secret agent for good and eventually joins the side of evil), great ingenuity about magic, very creditable world-building, and considerable wit. Although bearing its share of first-novel flaws, it has many more virtues, which include an underlying, serious examination of the good-evil dichotomy that is the basis of so many role-playing games. A Terrific Nonstandard Fantasy

In a twist on the usual fantasy story, Forward's heroes are not classically good-hearted heroes, but instead villians. Including an assassin, an evil sorceress, a greedy thief, and a black knight, the main characters are likable and intriguing. They band together to save the world from destruction by the powers of good.
In the beginning, I found the characters one-dimensional. However, as the story quickly unfolded, I was fascinated to see that both character introspection and interaction developed their personalities to an amazing degree. After that, even minor, short-lived characters managed to grab my attention fully.
There are a number of sly digs at other fantasy works, which make Villians By Necessity an even funnier book if you're well-read in fantasy novels.

Root for the bad guys!

After an all-out war, Good has at last triumphed over Evil. Peace, milk and cookies now reign over all the kingdoms. But something is wrong. The total victory of the forces of Good has created an internal imbalance in the universe and now, unless Evil is raised up to a measure of its former glory, the world will end. It falls upon an assorted group of leftover minor villains and misfits to save the day. Included in this contentious band are: Sam, a bored assassin always clothed in black; Arcie, his vertically-challenged sneakthief sidekick; Valeriana, an embittered sorceress; Kaylana, a Druid priestess; Blackmail, a mute black knight; and Robin, a naive minstrel-centaur who chronicles the villains' deeds. Pursued and harried at every turn by the minions of Good, with a spy lurking in their midst, this bunch of lowlifes must learn to co-exist and then somehow reopen the magically sealed Darkgate and release darkness back into the world. Only the Good die young? Not in this book.

Eve Forward may be the daughter of sci-fi writer Robert L. Forward but this debut novel is more reminiscent of Roger Zelazny's work, in its wit, tone and predisposition to upending themes. She writes with zest and imparts a sense of satiric fun to the epic proceedings. Her oily-haired assassin Sam is an endearing character, never mind that he's technically a bad guy. I fervently hope she puts out more books in the future. I wouldn't mind a bit if she revisits this fantasy universe.

Lastly, this book needs to be re-released and soon. I've looked everywhere for a copy and the lowest price I've found is $38.25 for a paperback from the original printing.

The knight Ivanhoe's crusade to expose the real truth about Islam's Toilet Bowl Genie

The author pulls no punches in "Tales from the East, Return of Ivanhoe", and Ivanhoe's not his real name either being a pseudonym for sure. The real author is an engineer who actually worked and lived in Saudi Arabia for several years which has provided him with an opportunity few of us have of living, eating, sleeping the culture, the religion, and lifestyle of this region. He makes no bones about the fact that he does not like what he found there, and he pulls no punches when it comes to his bottom dwelling opinion of the Moslem Religion. Although he has no problem with most Moslems, in "Tales of the East" he is constantly pointing out that it developed from much earlier Jewish and Christian sources, that it is nothing more than a plagiarism of the Bible, and that Christianity offers so much more than Islam. The author's choice of Ivanhoe for a pen name is no coincidence, because the author identifies strongly with Sir Walter Scott's 12th century character, a knight who's constantly entering jousting tournaments in his quest for good over evil. For this author, evil is personified in the very character and deeds of Mohammed himself who spawned a new religion, not to better the lot of mankind or to offer better things to come, but only for his personal glory and his own selfish pursuit of power. The author is relentless as he continues on to describe MIddle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia as intolerant totalitarian regimes that suppress human liberty while reducing its subjects to automatons mindlessly executing the power hungry schemes of their rules all of which is devoted to the single end of exterminating all other religions and freedom of thought so that Islam can enjoy complete domination over its subjects.

The last section of the book is a hilarious description of the Toilet Jinni, unflushed--a Moslem conjured evil spirit which once lurked deep inside latrines and toilet bowls where it could torment all those who failed to obey the most minute customs prescribed by Islam such as having to enter a toilet with one's right foot first, then exit the toilet while leading with the left foot. All of which is excellent imagery starting with the necessity of an Ivanhoe in the first place on a crusade to vanquish evil which in the end is nothing more than a spiritual pestilence lurking in the commode where it can afflict the unwary.

This book is written from an open minded perspective. The author thoroughly investigates who is God. Is it the god of Islam and the Koran or is it the Christian God of the Book? This is part two of an early work, King of Bat'ha. In King of Bat'ha, Hashim an American scientist reflects upon his faith while totally immersed in an Islamic culture and Sharia law. In King of Bat'ha, Hashim sought the truth. But through his experiences and respect for foreign culture it was not revealed where Hashim ultimately stood through his investigation. In Tales from the East, Ivanhoe leans upon his research analytical background to uncover the truth of these two contradictory faiths. Digging deep from the holy books of both the Koran and the Bible, Ivanhoe leaves no doubt where the evidence leads.

We live in an era of political correctness, where popular expression is to convey no absolute truth. However, Tales from the East is no politically correct game of chess, as Ivanhoe pulls no punishes and tells us exactly where the evidence leads. Ivanhoe points out contradictions and other problems between the Koran and the bible. If you ever wondered what the difference between these two faiths is really all about then you should get this book. Ivanhoe has investigated these contradictions, opening our eyes to discover that which has not been highly exposed.

Ivanhoe hits with precision from proofs established by both Christian & Muslim sources. Revealing the underlying motives and why Christian and Islamic societies may live so differently including their contrasting tolerances of other faiths. Nick Psaris has been developing automated trading systems for over 15 years. After graduating Duke University with a degree in Physics and Chinese, he began his career in finance at Morgan Stanley in New York. Excellent, Long-Needed Book for People Interested in KDB+

This book is outstanding.

KDB+ is a very powerful system, but newcomers can be intimidated by two things: its steep learning curve and the seeming lack of organized introductory material. When I was learning KDB, I considered two resources to be indispensable: First Derivatives "KDB+ Reference Manual" and Boror's "Q for Mortals." Psaris' new text is a VERY welcome addition to that collection.

Psaris' book will gently start you with the basics, and then lead you into more powerful examples. The book is very well organized, and I especially enjoyed his explanations as to the rationale as to why KDB does things the way it does. KDB's error messages ("`type"?) can be cryptic, but Psaris' book helped my understanding quite a bit.

I bought a copy for myself, but I also bought a copy for my colleague because this book is a godsend for people new to Q. If you're in the same position I was in - experienced in C/C++/Java (but not in any array programming languages); some development/DBA experience in Oracle or MySQL and you think KDB will be more of that same (it most certainly will not); and you have to learn KDB+ - this book will help you immensely.

I found it very hard to learn KDB and Q purely from the wiki as the provided tutorials focus on low level language details and not how to approach or structure a project.

About the Author
Robert Boyd has written widely on evolutionary theory, focusing especially on the evolution of cooperation and the role of culture in human evolution. His book Culture and the Evolutionary Process received the J. I. Staley Prize, and he has also published numerous articles in scientific journals and edited volumes. Boyd is currently the Origins Professor in the School of Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University.

Joan B. Silk has conducted extensive research on the social lives of monkeys and apes, including extended fieldwork on chimpanzees at Gombe Stream Reserve in Tanzania and on baboons in Kenya and Botswana. She is also interested in the application of evolutionary thinking to human behavior. She has published numerous articles in scientific journals and edited volumes. She is currently a professor in the School of Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University.

Championship-worthy guide of homonids and evolution

Excellent book. Even though I am actually not majoring in anthropology (actually, as a requirement for natural science in Boston University), it is very detailed and has good connections to high-school biology as well. So far, I think it is very accessible for even the most biologically ready high school student, and it has very vivacious (lovely) pictures. In general, it is a championship-winning book, with excellent objectives clearly outlined in each chapter, and great review questions in the end.

Bonus: it is worth reading the 5% of a (anything) is better than no like a (anything) at all. Thanks prof Hodges Simeon :-)

This time I loved ol' Caulfield

I first read this book sixty years ago and my recent reaction was completely different. As a teenager I was shocked by the language and that was about all that I remembered. I also missed the fact that he was in a mental institution talking to a psychoanalyst. In short, I didn't get it at all. This time I loved ol' Caulfield. Apart from being mixed up and needing to get his act together, he's the neatest kid in the world. Watch the news on TV a while. Everyone IS a moron. And when is the last time any of us has had an interesting face to face conversation? I was stunned at how contemporary this book seems and (for good or for ill) how engagingly authentic the teenage voice sounds. If you are like me and read this book ages ago, read it again and see if your reaction is different now.

Catcher's guide needs work

This essay is for people who have not read The Catcher in the Rye because most of what is offered is obvious after a single reading. read the book instead.
