I've met Laurie Hartman at F.I.C.O.,Flanders International College of Osteopathy,were he tought his techniques.He is so brilliant that he remaines the modest man himself.His manipulations as he does it are so easy and we ,the students , are wresteling with it.I've learned to follow the tissues and not the technique as we learned them. A Beautiful Deception

I give this book 3 stars to split the difference between the 1 star it deserves as a book, and the 5 it deserves as a marketing lesson.

Like most reviewers so far, I bought this book because I'm a fan of SG. However, while I do believe he is preaching his message with the sincere intention to serve us, his readers, I must disagree with the raving reviews. As I read the same message he's given us before, remixed with nuggets from his vast reading, I feel deja vu. The book is like a handful of fortune cookies from SG's all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet.

The Icarus Deception is grab-bag of his market insight and signature motivational style, already well-expressed on his blog and in his other books. The references to SG's broad reading (even Ulysses gets a nod) was probably thrown in to mix things up, but all it does for this reader is mix up things.

The cajoling to seize your destiny, and live as an artist of life, is not without charm. But SG can do better. He is better than this book. His readers certainly deserve better. Mr. Godin, your readers deserve all of that enormous brain of yours, not just the clever marketing gland (which I can only assume is just above the lizard brain).

A good book on life and work as an artist is the "The Elephant and the Flea" by Charles Handy.

Good examination of what it means to be an artist - could've been much shorter

Overall I’d recommend this book.

His basic message is to create things you feel compelled to create, because that's your best shot at success in this new economy.

With the advent of the Internet, distribution is now basically free. In the traditional economy, everything was tangible and thus scarce. Customers demanded these goods, so value was created when you could bring these goods to the customers. That created lots of gatekeepers who would decide how to allocate their scarce resources: retailers charge slot fees, publishing houses pick authors, etc.

However, now distribution is free: billions of people are (mostly) free to connect with any of the others billions of people. It’s an unprecedented and amazing time for us, given how important connections are to us.

But because distribution is free, there’s a lot more noise out there. Curation is still important. How do you cut through all the noise and add value to other people?

The answer is that you do things that are valuable and are worthy of cutting through the noise. And the author asserts you do that in two ways: making a commitment to art, and getting good at that art.

Art, as defined by the author, is work that is new, real, and important. It’s using your gifts to make a difference in other people’s lives.

It’s operating without a map, exploring the edge of what’s possible. And, it’s inherently risky. You might fail. You’ll probably fail. There have always been “safe paths”, but those necessarily required you to follow a plan that’s not yours. And people usually have to give up part of themselves to follow it.

Instead, now today, we live in a world where you can create your own path. You can find and serve your customers wherever they are. But you need to find your unique offering, because if you just copy someone else, then customers will just go to that someone else.

There are millions of bloggers out there, but certain bloggers stand out in part because of their unique voice. We connect with them, we like their style and personality. But I’m not going to connect with every great blogger because some will just rub me wrong. That’s OK, because someone I connect with will rub someone else the wrong way.

When you can’t please everyone, that’s OK in the new economy. In fact, that is a differentiator.

One action item from this book is to recognize situations where I’m feeling internal fear/stalling/insecurity when creating, recognizing procrastination and subtle instinct to seek approval. Another is to remember that shame is a choice – you can’t feel ashamed without your permission, only if you agree it’s bad.

The major critique I have for this book is it’s way too long. This thing could’ve been 25% the size and still gotten the major points across. It meanders this way and that way. I’m sure he could’ve made more concise without compromising himself.

I Love Seth (but this book is 1.5x too long)

The book in a nutshell:

1. We've been brainwashed by the industrial complex to fly too low, to comply, to surrender our brilliance for perceived security.
2. That strategy once worked--our comfort zone and that safety zone we were offered were aligned.
3. They are no longer aligned and most aren't noticing. That's dangerous. The world tilted on it's axis and folks aren't noticing.
4. The new gig is to produce "art" in whatever you do (no matter what you do), because art "connects" and people want connection.
5. Everybody can be an artist at whatever they choose to do. You don't need to change your work or career. Just elevate your work to art.
6. But to do that you have to step over fear and the lizard brain (amygdala) we have that screams "you are gonna die!" if we attempt to do something risky and creative.
7. But you gotta do that because the world is waiting on your art, your connection, your breath of fresh air.

The bulk of the book is looking at the nuances of all this in about 88 different ways when you'd really probably get it after four. He's got a great theme and call to action, and there are some gems in here to be sure. But there are times when I was simply thinking to myself, "Really, Seth? I trusted you, and you are driving me around all the blocks in the neighborhood when just a couple would have conveyed the sense of the place."

But heck. Maybe I didn't get the "art" of this type of book. But don't get me wrong. I'll buy the next Seth book because Seth rocks and all. But, my goodness, this was the longest short read I've ever read, and I even just skimmed all the Kickstarter Acknowledgements that are a whopping 20% of the total length of the book. Would I recommend the book? I am glad for the gems I pulled out of it. But, honestly, after seeing the pattern, I was ready for the book to be over with. So the answer is, "It depends." If what you are looking for is a kick in the pants to get on with your "art," I'd recommend Pressfield's "The War of Art" instead. If you are not sure you are an artist or can be an artist at whatever you do, and want to entertain that idea, then this book might be for you.

This is simply a single PDF file of the catalog. It is in black and white (no color), and it is not searchable. The table of contents is clickable, which is good, so you can click to your country of interest. A bit disappointed. The publisher has missed a tremendous opportunity to create a usable tool for active banknote collectors and traders.

Another decent catalog. Its pretty useful, but I still can't give 5 stars because it's all in black and white, and some of the pictures are a little hard to make out. As I said with the other volume, it would be nice if they split this up into a few different books, and printed it in color. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for something that was printed in that way.

I also found a lot of entries in this catalog that didn't have pictures, which was somewhat frustrating.

The Year We Turned Forty CHAPTER ONE June 2005
“Push! Harder!”

The labor-and-delivery nurse belted out the command as Jessie shook her head defiantly in response, her entire body trembling, sweat and tears dripping down her face, pooling at the base of her neck. Even as the baby crowned, she knew she wasn’t ready for its arrival.

“I can’t,” she finally managed, her mouth as dry as a ball of cotton. She’d kill for a drink of something that would quench her thirst—in fact, she could vividly picture herself strangling the nurse in exchange for a tumbler piled high with huge cubes of ice and filled to the brim with cold water.

“You can do this.” Her husband Grant’s breath felt like fire on her ear, his words fast and fumbled, desperation lacing every one. He and the nurse had been having a not-so-subtle conversation with their eyes for the last hour, their concern heightened with every raised eyebrow and pointed look at the baby’s heart monitor attached to Jesse’s protruding belly. “You have to. It’s time. Please, honey.” Grant’s pale skin was glistening under the fluorescent lights, his dark hair matted against his head as if he was the one who’d been in labor for almost twenty hours. He rubbed the corners of his dark green eyes vigorously, and Jessie knew he was searching for the encouraging yet forceful words that would make her want to push the baby out, but his slumped shoulders exposed how close he was to admitting defeat.

Her pregnancy had been difficult for so many reasons, and Jessie wasn’t one bit surprised that it was culminating in an arduous labor. In her mind, she deserved every painful contraction, every minute that clicked by without relief.

Jessie could feel her baby fighting its way out now, and she remembered why that severe burning sensation between her legs was called the ring of fire. She tried to concentrate on the hideous paintings of pastel floral arrangements adorning every wall, but the searing pain yanked her back to reality just as her doctor walked into the room, effortlessly releasing the commanding words Grant was having trouble articulating. “This baby is coming—now—and you have a job to do here, Jessie.”

“Okay,” Jessie huffed before taking a deep breath, gathering a current from deep inside her, and pushing with a force she didn’t realize she had. The baby’s first cries unleashed a tornado of emotions—of joy and sadness, relief and anxiety. As her newborn son was placed on her chest and she inhaled his smell, she was bewildered by how holding her baby for the first time could be both the best and the worst moment of her life.

“What do you think is taking so long?” Gabriela glanced at the clock on the wall, her long nails tapping the ripped navy blue armrest beside her, her makeup from the birthday party the night before smudged beneath her coffee-colored eyes. She was still wearing her skintight emerald green dress. Despite the amniotic fluid stain down the side—Jessie’s water broke in a violent burst at Gabriela’s house the night before, splashing off the travertine tile and onto her dress—it was attracting more than a few approving glances.

“I’m sure it will be any minute now,” Claire declared calmly from behind a tattered copy of an old tabloid magazine. The couple canoodling on the cover had long since split up. “I actually thought because it’s her third kid she’d push like one time and poof, we’d have ourselves a baby.”

Gabriela glanced at the swinging doors once more, willing Grant to burst through them like a jubilant new father, dispersing candy cigars as he announced that the baby had arrived safely. When Jessie’s water broke, something had cracked open inside Gabriela too—an incredible desire to hold the infant, to nuzzle it against her and marvel at its ten tiny fingers and toes. She’d never wanted children of her own, and had never wavered, not even when her husband, Colin, would place yet another of their friends’ birth announcements in front of her with an expectant look in his eyes. She’d gently repeat her explanation—that she didn’t feel she was meant to be a mother. Then she’d watch the range of emotions ripple across his face—first the frustration that she wouldn’t change her mind for him, followed by the realization he’d never be someone’s father. But ultimately, the love he felt for Gabriela always won out. She’d been honest about how she felt since early in the relationship, and until they had married, she’d thought he had been on the same page. But then he would drop a hint here, make a comment there, and she often wondered when or if he’d finally stop bringing it up. Until eventually, he did.

Which is when something unexpected happened.

Gabriela had recently turned forty. When she did, it revealed a hole inside of her she hadn’t known was there. Now, she couldn’t wait to see the look on Colin’s face when she told him she was ready to be a mom.

Claire eyed Gabriela discreetly from behind her magazine, watching her carefully cross and uncross her long legs. Gabriela could be described as a lot of things: organized, practical, whip smart, even nurturing. But worrisome and anxious were not words Claire would ever use, and Gabriela’s nervous behavior baffled her. She was surprised Gabriela had not only come to the hospital but waited here this entire time. It wouldn’t have been at all out of character for her to have stayed at the party and visited the baby once it was cleaned, bundled, and sleeping soundly in a bassinet. Jessie had actually tried to convince both of them to do just that. Through clenched teeth and short, heavy breaths, while Grant was pulling up the car, Jessie had practically begged them not to ride with her to the hospital, to please stay and enjoy the party because it was theirs too, the urgency in her best friend’s blue eyes taking her by surprise, almost enough to make Claire agree.

Gabriela’s, Jessie’s, and Claire’s birthdays fell within a few months of each other—Gabriela in late May, Claire in June, and Jessie in July—and they’d made a vow almost twenty years before, while sipping beers at a dive bar in Newport Beach, their feet crunching the peanut shells covering the floor, to always celebrate together. Last night, they’d clasped hands as Colin toasted them, making a joke that forty was the new eighteen. Gabriela glowed as her husband captivated the crowd, Jessie shifted her weight, nervous and uncomfortable, her bladder signaling she needed to go again. And Claire only half listened as she popped a strawberry into her mouth, shyly making eye contact with a man different from any she’d met before, who’d made her heart flutter when they’d grazed arms and shared small talk at the chocolate fountain earlier.

Claire’s phone vibrated in her hand and her stomach jumped as she realized the adorable guy she had bantered with last night was now calling. She pulled her magazine up slightly to hide her smile from Gabriela. Forty was starting off right.

Jessie squeezed her eyes, fighting the flow of tears that continued to gush from them, like a pipe that had burst inside her. She hugged her baby to her chest tightly, putting her finger inside his hand and watching as he gripped it. She studied her newborn son’s scrunched face, searching for her own features, trying to calm her rapid breath as she instantly recognized the shape of his nose and jut of his chin. She glanced over at Grant. Did he see it too? She had promised herself that she would tell him today. That he deserved to know the truth. She even let herself believe that he might stay anyway, although she was smart enough to realize that it would never be the same, that she’d never again catch him looking at her like he’d just met her and was intrigued by all the things he didn’t yet know.

Grant pressed his lips to her forehead and combed his fingers through her damp hair. She looked at him hard, trying to etch each angle of his face into her memory, so she could always remember what it was like to have him love her like this.

“I have something to tell you,” Jessie said in a lowered voice as she glanced at the nurses busily cleaning up.

“Me too.” Grant gently took the baby from her and cuddled him against his broad chest, his eyes glinting with tears. “I love the girls with all my heart, but I never knew it would feel this way to have a son.”

Jessie swallowed the words that had been sitting on her tongue and made a choice. She had no idea if it was the right one, but it was the only one she was capable of making. “I’m so glad. He looks just like you.”

My Review:

The Year We Turned Forty was an exceptionally written, creative, interesting, and highly entertaining read. This was my first experience with either author but will now be tracking them both in the same manner I following sales announcements for my favorite boutique. The writing was superb, painfully insightful, thoughtful, observant, clever, and all engrossing. Once I started, I could not put my kindle down and resented all interruptions to my reading. The characters were fully inhabited and endearing, yet frustrating and deeply flawed – well - aren’t we all? The storyline presented an interesting premise; I liked thinking of what I would do if offered the same 10 year do-over…

Great story

I loved this book! I am always intrigued by books involving time travel. This one had a unique twist , in where three women got to go back in time 10 years, and make different choices which would change the outcome of their life. It was well written and really got me thinking about how even if you make different choices in life , you still have problems, just different ones. What I loved about this book was that it made me think, the characters were well crafted, and it was an easy, fast read. I am looking forward to reading other books by this talented duo.

Once again, another amazing novel. But as I'm facing my 50th as well, this book got me to thinking: would I do it all again, but better? If I'd turned left instead of right, would I still be standing where I am? Would I want to? The answer? Lies within this novel as well as within each of us. Never regret something that made you smile. Enjoy it! I sure did!!

Dividing comic elements into categories of literary devices, psychological/social features, and psychological/social function, Jackson examines the narratives of a number of biblical characters for evidence of these comic elements. The characters include the trickster matriarchs, the women involved in the infancy of Moses, Rahab, Deborah and Jael, Delilah, three of David's wives (Michal, Abigail, Bathsheba), Jezebel, Ruth, and Esther. Nine particularly instructive points of contact between comedy and feminist interpretation emerge: both (1) resist definition, (2) exist amidst a self/other, subject/object dichotomy, (3) emphasise and utilise context, (4) promote creativity, (5) acknowledge the concept of distancing, (6) work towards revelation, (7) are subversive, (8) are concerned with containment and control, and (9) enable survival. The use of comedy as an interpretive lens for the Hebrew Bible is not without difficulties for feminist interpretation. While maintaining an uncomfortable, even painful, awareness of the hold patriarchy retains on the Hebrew Bible, feminist critics can still choose to allow comedy's revelatory, subversive, survivalist nature to do its work revealing, subverting, and surviving.

About the Author

Melissa, a native of North Carolina, did her undergraduate study in journalism and business at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Veering from that course of study took her to Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (Virginia), where she obtained a Master of Divinity and was subsequently ordained as a Baptist minister. After working several years in the church, she returned to academia in Oxford, where she was awarded a Dphil in Theology (Old Testament). Melissa is currently back in Richmond at her alma mater, BTSR, teaching Old Testament studies.

There are limited Tamil resources available in the US, and this was the first dictionary/phrasebook I found. It does not use the Tamil script-- it only offers romanised words, which I find frustrating as a beginner trying to learn how to spell Tamil words. The phrases seem useful; the two-page cultural overviews and tourist tips are just half-hearted attempts. It's better than nothing, but not a substitute for a more complete dictionary.

As the other review points out, this dictionary only uses Romanized language and no Tamil script. In fairness, spoken Tamil and written Tamil are different which might account for not wanting to include it...

There are actually some decent online Tamil dictionaries which have both the Romanized and Tamil script. Google has scanned a few public domain dictionaries. Check out the Digital Dictionaries of South Asia put together by the University of Chicago: [...]

However, if you are looking at this page, you probably want something you can take with you and you will end up buying this item no matter what. Get it used if you can and know that it is very limited in number of entries.

this is a nice phrasebook for English speakers. If you are a reader of Tamil, this is not the best book. It does have helpful cultural information, and it helps English readers with Tamil pronunciation.
