A Really Great Book on Agile

This book was by far the best one i have read on various aspects of Agile Project Management. It is written clearly with a minimum of unnecessary jargon and BS. Mr. Waters is clearly a well seasoned practicioner and the book is very practical and useful with great tips regarding the various techniques. I plan to use this book as the recommended text book for my University of California classes on "Agile for Everyone" Beyond just Software.

About the Author

Wynn Kapit graduated in 1955 from the University of Miami, Florida with honors in Business Administration and Law. He then attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked in New York as a graphic designer and advertising art director from 1960-66. He moved to California to pursue a painting career and was given a one-man show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1968. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Masters in Painting and worked as a portraitist and teacher of figure drawing.

While taking a class in human anatomy at San Francisco City College, he discovered a way to effectively learn the subject by coloring in drawings, diagrams and names. The teacher of the course, Lawrence Elson, Ph.D. agreed to help him produce a coloring book. Elson wrote and Kapit designed and illustrated The Anatomy Coloring Book, which was published in 1977 and has been a widely-translated bestseller ever since. The Physiology Coloring Book was published in 1987, with the assistance of two professors from Berkeley: Robert Macey and Esmail Meisami. The Geography Coloring Book was published in 1991; Kapit drew the maps and wrote the text. The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in a second edition in 1993, and second editions of Geography and Physiology Coloring Books will be published in 1997.

Robert Macey is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Professor of Physiology and Chair of the Department of Physiology-Anatomy at Berkeley. Dr. Macey has written extensive research articles and reviews on membrane transport as well as a successful text on human physiology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Esmail Meisami is a professor in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois. He has authored and edited books on biology, physiology, human growth and development, and developmental neurobiology and has written numerous research papers on sensory systems and hormones in brain development. He received his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of California at Berkeley.

Absolutely the best way to learn Physiology

This book is incredible - authors have really latched onto a great teaching technique. The information is excellent, succinct and very complete. The drawings are incredibly detailed and FUN to color (ok I'm 52 and may be in my 2nd childhood, but this is an very effective way to learn a very complex subject.) I am a vet tech student going for a second career (and possible poverty) - classic midlife crisis - and this book is great. In addition to being very informative and intellectually stimulating, it is also relaxing to do the coloring. And, there are things I have learned that I will never forget because my mind immediately recalls me coloring the particular process. Wish there were a similar Anatomy book that concentrated more on veterinary anatomy - the parallel coloring book for Anatomy is very human-centered.
Two criticisms:
1) I think the authors are trying to save you $$$ so they say you only need 10 colored pencils - save yourself frustration and buy the Crayola box of 32 at any art store - only $8.50 or so - and save yourself some grief - there are many plates that need more than 10 colors.
2) There are a few errors in the coloring notes - not too many - but they do exist, so if something seems wrong, just use your common sense.

Unparalleled learning tool!

I purchased this book after discovering how useful the Anatomy Coloring Book was to my studies, and I have to say I'm every bit as impressed with Wynn Kapit's second book! Although at first glance this would appear to be an overly simplistic method of learning (frankly, I don't think I've colored since I was six!), I've found it to be beneficial for several reasons - the colouring process introduces an entirely new aspect of learning (versus reading and auditory methods), and allows the student to see the positioning and relationship of the physiological processes in question. The diagrams are clear and comprehensive, and when completed, present an easy-reference, colour-coded plate for the student to quickly refer back to. Even after in-depth text readings on the various physiological systems, I find that completing the appropriate "coloring plate" in the Physiology Coloring Book leaves me with a much more complete understanding of the system in question. I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying physiology - for a course or for their own personal development. The effort required to complete these plates could undoubtedly be the difference between studying the process and learning the process!

Excellent Review of Physiology

I found this to be an excellent self-study review of a subject whose details were becoming vague in my mind. The attention required to color each page requires that the reader attend to each aspect of the subject so that it stays with him; it is not forgotten immediately as are so many written texts. The Anatomy Coloring Book makes a good companion to this workbook. Alone, the anatomy book is a bit too elemental but it is useful in conjunction with this excellent exposition of basic physiology.

Great Tractor Trailer Guide

I liked this book so much I bought an additional copy and gave it to my driving school. It is written in a way that the new driver needs. I especially like the section on backing the trailer. It outlines numerous scenarios that the driver will encounter and talks you through the authors thoughts on how to handle each situation. For me it was money well spent.

Good info but not very in depth

This book had some good ideas and insights, especially in practical advice like trip planning, communications and visualizing trailer manuvering. It did not necessarily follow a well thought out organization of chapters. It was worth what I paid for it but the Bumper to Bumper: The Complete Guide to Tractor-Trailer Operations is a better investment if you are looking for a more complete coverage of Tractor/Trailer operations.

Eoghan Casey is an internationally recognized expert in data breach investigations and information security forensics. He is founding partner of CASEITE.com, and co-manages the Risk Prevention and Response business unit at DFLabs. Over the past decade, he has consulted with many attorneys, agencies, and police departments in the United States, South America, and Europe on a wide range of digital investigations, including fraud, violent crimes, identity theft, and on-line criminal activity. Eoghan has helped organizations investigate and manage security breaches, including network intrusions with international scope. He has delivered expert testimony in civil and criminal cases, and has submitted expert reports and prepared trial exhibits for computer forensic and cyber-crime cases.

In addition to his casework and writing the foundational book Digital Evidence and Computer Crime, Eoghan has worked as R&D Team Lead in the Defense Cyber Crime Institute (DCCI) at the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) helping enhance their operational capabilities and develop new techniques and tools. He also teaches graduate students at Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute and created the Mobile Device Forensics course taught worldwide through the SANS Institute. He has delivered keynotes and taught workshops around the globe on various topics related to data breach investigation, digital forensics and cyber security.

Eoghan has performed thousands of forensic acquisitions and examinations, including Windows and UNIX systems, Enterprise servers, smart phones, cell phones, network logs, backup tapes, and database systems. He also has information security experience, as an Information Security Officer at Yale University and in subsequent consulting work. He has performed vulnerability assessments, deployed and maintained intrusion detection systems, firewalls and public key infrastructures, and developed policies, procedures, and educational programs for a variety of organizations. Computer Crime Investigation...Cookbook!

What is your real interest?
If you have a strong background on computer networks, and want to know about 'true' computers forensic, then you should consider books like 'Know your Enemy' or 'Intrusion Signatures and Analysis'. Else, if you are not a computer networks expert or not even a computer professional, and want to have some knowledge about computers forensic, then this can be your book: very comprehensive, not too depth, rich of examples, and, as a bonus, covering several emerging security issues like Wireless Network Analysis and Embedded Systems Analysis.
Note, however that:
- It is not a traditional book, but rather a set of 'essays'.
- The contained material is quite biased, since several explanations seem to be more oriented toward promoting tools than to discuss the areas they are intended for.

You'll find something to like in this collection of essays

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I bought "Handbook of Computer Crime Investigation" (HoCCI) to expand my knowledge of incident response and digital forensics. While "Incident Response" by Mandia, Prosise, and Pepe remains my top pick, HoCCI contains enough original material to qualify as recommended reading.

HoCCI is a collection of 14 distinct chapters written by 17 authors. The book's main audience appears to be law enforcement personnel, and Academic Press markets the book as a title in its "Forensic Science" catalog. The introduction states the book is written for "forensic examiners" who testify in court, although anyone performing digital forensics will find useful sections.

Some of HoCCI's strengths include numerous case studies. Ch. 2 offers examples of "ineffective" and "effective" disclosure and production of digital records in legal proceedings. Chs. 12, 13, and 14 are dedicated to factual legal and incident response scenarios. Reading these anecdotes, I perceived most of the 17 authors to be extremely familiar with their field.

Beyond helpful case studies, HoCCI provides several strong technical chapters. Bob Sheldon's Windows section (ch. 7) is excellent, and Ronald van der Knijff's embedded systems essay (ch. 11) explains the cutting edge of digital forensics. His discussions of directly reading FLASH and EEPROM memory, and using power analysis to break passwords, are impressive. I enjoyed Steve Romig's explanation of using Cisco NetFlow logs in ch. 4, and found the descriptions of wireless systems in ch. 10 to be useful.

HoCCI is not without faults. Several chapters seem like product advertisements; EnCase is the focus of ch. 3, while NFR's IDS appears in ch. 5. The network analysis section (ch. 9) repeats the much-quoted myth that TCP sequence numbers count packets; they actually count bytes of application data.

Overall, HoCCI is a useful supplement to Foundstone's "Incident Response." HoCCI may spend too many pages describing how to search hard drives for remnants of illicit images, illegal software, or harassing emails. Fortunately, its technical content distinguishes it from "Computer Forensics" by Kruse and Heiser and "Incident Response: A Strategic Guide" by Schultz and Shumway.

Hands-on, immediately applicable to our real-world cases

Eoghan Casey's text is immediately useful. It's not theory, it's practical. It's not biased to one operating system, but covers several technologies. Finally, Eoghan and the book's contributors do not gloss over today's most offensive topics, they address them with vigor and solutions.

I would share one concern: the chapter-long product/vendor discussion. Some reviewers label it marketing; other reviewers don't mention it at all. I'll just forewarn you that you will learn much more about EnCase or NFR than about their competitors.

As a security consultant for Hewlett-Packard, it seems my bookshelf fills up entirely too easily, especially as of the last few years. Therefore, I've gotten fairly selective with new book purchases (until I can get a new bookshelf). However, Casey's text is DEFINITELY worth getting - worth knocking another book off to make room. :)

I hope you enjoy this comprehensive text at least half as much as I do.

Great explanations + access to 3 practice exams (plus you don't have to deal with Salty - the condescending kracker)

I took the first administration of the new MCAT on April 17th, 2015. To prepare I read all 7 of the Kaplan books, supplemented with Khan Academy, and I felt very prepared for the exam. Yes, there were some concepts in the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section that I felt Kaplan did not cover. However to be honest, these concepts were also not explicitly mentioned on the AAMC outline.

PROS:
-They connect all the concepts and give tips, examples, mnemonics, and connections throughout all the books. There is quite a bit of reading to get through the books, but hey, the entire MCAT is testing your reading comprehension so you may as well get good at it. Connecting all these concepts really helped me see the bigger picture of what this test is about.

-Emphasis on key topics that were tested on and repetition of these concepts again and again and again.

-Simplified explanations (read below for Exam Kracker comparison): When you get a question wrong, it's nice to not only know the right answer but to also know why the answer you chose is wrong. Kaplan’s explanations help you identify your weaker areas and it also teaches you how to strategize. For a majority of the questions encountered on the MCAT, you’ll need to identify the "most correct" answer from other answers that are also correct. This is not only knowledge-driven but strategy-driven as well. If you don’t understand why you’re missing questions, then you won’t be able to improve your score. Kaplan has the best and most simplified explanations and I think this was the biggest contributor in my practice test score improvements.

-Buying the books gives you access to an online portion of materials that includes 3 practice exams, and two "mini" passage tests per topic. These practice exams were EXTREMELY helpful. In my opinion, they were more accurate than the aamc practice exam to the real test.

Comparison to Exam Krackers books: I took the old MCAT about a year prior to taking the new test and studied from Exam Krackers, using a bit of Princeton Review on the side. My biggest issue with EK books were that they did not connect the concepts in a manner that helped me understand or remember the material better. Most of my time studying was spent trying to decipher the explanations given for the practice passages. And when I say decipher, I mean that the explanations are so vague I would end up spending countless hours trying to learn the concepts at a "deeper conceptual level", when really my issue was that frankly I just sucked at eliminating wrong answers and making educated guesses. These are skills that improved tremendously when I used the Kaplan books for the new MCAT.

I was able to borrow the new Exam Kracker books from a friend two weeks prior to taking the new MCAT as last minute practice after utilizing all of the Kaplan and Khan materials. I only did the passages in the Bio I (Biochem) and Psych books. Comparatively, the passages provided in the Bio I EK book were no better than those provided from Kaplan, and once again the explanations were vague. For the last four passages in the EK Pysch book, I felt the answers were extremely subjective and absolutely ridiculous. As well, the EK Psych book is less than half the size of the Kaplan equivalent (much less material and explanation). And of course the stupid mascot of EK- "salty the condescending kracker" is on every other page making pointless, condescending comments.

Bottom line: Kaplan books rocked. I felt well prepared (in combination with Khan Academy) and I had access to 3 practice exams at less cost than other prep companies.

Also, please note that the most critical review (thus far) of these books is an MCAT instructor paid to teach from Exam Krackers materials. I am a student. I have studied from both Exam Krackers and Kaplan and have taken both the old and new MCATs. Please ask if you have any questions about the prep material.

Worth every penny!

I was very hesitant about my potential performance on the MCAT prior to owning and using these books. I'm 30 pages into the General Chemistry book, and I can honestly say my confidence is now up to par. After skimming through the rest of the books, I will say that they are laid out perfectly. Not too wordy, and gets right to the point. I have never owned or used Kaplan products, but after using this series, I will recommend it to anyone. The price ~$150 is extremely cheap when compared to MCAT courses that can run up to almost $10,000 for a summer course. If you can manage your time, and genuinely want to study, this is all you need!

Just took my Mcat 2015

Just took my mcat on April 18th 2015. I would recommend the Kaplan series with the exception of the Psych/Sociology Book. It lacked a lot of information that showed up in my Mcat. Thank god I had some background (I was a psych minor and took a general sociology class) or I would have been sweating through out the section. Definitely outsource for a different psych/sociology book.

True Encyclopedia of Iron

This is a true encyclopedia of the American cars from the 70's. The book is organized by year - think of it as an almanac of American iron. Within each year, there is a detailed section on each manufacturer. Theses sections are wonderful - outlining what was going on with that car maker...photos of their models for the year, and then very detailed sections on each model. The model data includes measurements, pricing, options and production numbers. The appendices are incredible - another treasure trove of info on concept cars and logos. If you love the cars of the 70's, you will appreciate the comprehensive data that Flory has assembled. This is incredible amount of reference info all in one place.

One of a three books series.
My interest is in what came after the muscle car era which is why I ran with 1973-1980 book.
I don't get it till Fathers Day but I am looking forward to it.
