Good start - Poor finish

The first five or six chapters are interesting but after this the book gets very repetitive. I was hoping for some real insights and experiences about the times Gates spent as Secretary but most of the writing was limited to broad generalisations about people and events. I gave up on the book before the end.

This book is a good read. It is really a bunch of vignettes of Robert Gates experiences and little teaching lessons associated. After a while it does get a bit repetitive, but all in all quite a good read. Recommend if you work with people and aim to be a leader.

This is an excellent book and I haven't even finished it yet. This is the 7th book in a series of 9. Dr Cole is right on time with the information included in all of his books. There is not a day goes by that I dont reflect back on something I learned in these books. The books are worth ten times what you pay for them based on the data received from them. I can only wish I found this curriculum earlier, it could have saved my marriage.

readable literary criticism of Donaldson

Keep in mind, contrary to most of the reviews below, this is NOT a novel by Stephen Donaldson. It's a scholarly book written by a PhD ABOUT Donaldson's Thomas Covenant trilogies. If you're looking for the actual books, don't get this one. As for this book, Variations on the Fantasy Tradition, it's readable, if somewhat over written and in places awkward--a common failing of academic writing. It examines Donaldson's Covenant books (mainly the First Chronicles) in light of general trends and tendencies in fantasy. As such, it's often a compare-contrast operation: this is what a fantasy hero is usually like; this is how Thomas Covenant is similar and different from the standard fantasy hero. It covers in its chapters the hero and how Covenant is something of an inversion of the typical hero; comparisons to Tolkien; myth and how it is used in the Covenant books; the significance/importance of knowledge in the books and how it is gained; the narrative structure; and how life and death are viewed and what meanings they are given in the text. It also does a general coverage of the Second Chronicles. Some "trivia" are gotten wrong or misstated, so that could have been tightened up, though that in itself doesn't affect any of the main points made. The scholarship isn't ground-breaking and it's fairly straightforward, but interesting to me as someone who liked the Covenant books and has taken English courses. The interviews with Donaldson are interesting, though I wouldn't buy it only for them ....If you liked thinking about the themes and ideas in the Covenant books, you may like this, though more of it is devoted to form and structure and than the meanings/reasons behind them (i.e. how Covenant differs from typical heros as opposed to _why_ make him not like other heros). But, then, that's not really why this book was written. It's aim is to locate Donaldson in the literary canon of fantasy. So in that sense, it does all right. Say, three and a half stars.

Excellent review of Donaldson's work

As a fan of Donaldson's Covenant series, I was delighted to see that there was a scholarly work of literary criticism covering the Chronicles. There have been so many written about The Lord of the Rings (deservedly so) but none regarding Covenant. I felt this was a mistake, as Donaldson's works, while certainly not equal to Tolkien's, bear significant literary merit.

One of the things I found most interesting was the shared vocabulary between Senior and Donaldson. Any reader of Donaldson knows that he enjoys employing archaic words. Senior even levies this as somewhat of a criticism. However, *he uses some of the same words*. I couldn't help but chuckle. To argue for clarity, and then go against your own argument is, well, silly.

But that's the worst I can say about the book. Other than works on literary criticism regarding Tolkien, this was one of the very few that I read from cover to cover. He didn't miss many points (although as others have pointed out there were some factual innaccuries; these were minor, though).

This book is absolutely pertinent for today's Naturopathic Physician who is blending traditional Nature Cure with clinical medicine. I found it to be very helpful when developing clinical plans for patients in our student clinic. It is clear and thorough, and give a vast amount of peer reviewed research regarding each subject chapter.

This is a good book easy to read, helpful for variety of disease. I haven't quite finished it but I was anxious to find the latest information on Iridology and Traditional Chinese Medicine, unfortunately they removed it, for other material. When mentioning how great the patients did with x herb they usually categorized them under their scientific name instead of the historical name they are known for...which is time consuming when you desire to find the Cause of the problem, instead of 'naming things'. I would put this on my shelf next to "the clinicians handbook of natural medicine 2nd edition" since it has similar flow but by a different N.D. Author.( if it was in Hardcover, I would pay the extra bucks, since this similar to a reference book, and listen reader a new book will be coming out that will be referencing this one... If your interested in knowing start investigating hehe

The Knight’s Tale has, in fact, been illustrated many times, but never so thoroughly as in the current edition. Moreover, past illustrations have tended to romanticize or sentimentalize the story, eschewing its most violent and disturbing images. The illustrations in this edition attempt to recapture Chaucer’s mature vision of the noble life, which refuses to deny the tragic aspects of the chivalric equation of love with war and war with honor. Past illustrations have also tended to adopt a Gothic idiom. The illustrations in our edition adopt a Classical Greek idiom drawn from the Parthenon frieze, Attic black- and red-figure pottery, and ancient Greek sculpture—an idiom suitable to the setting of the tale in legendary Athens and Thebes as well as to Chaucer’s humanist impusle.

Its only objective is pillage—to pay off the Athenian troops—and, of course, it is while ransacking the dead that they find Palamon and Arcite still alive among a pile of corpses, a detail unique to Chaucer’s text. While such a practice was endemic to chivalric warfare, it was difficult to contain once started, and it would inevitably produce results inimical to Theseus’s stated purpose for going to war against Thebes, which was to right a wrong done to a group of helpless women. As Maurice Keen writes, the trouble with the practice of looting-as-pay was that to pay off soldiers in this way

was not the same as to disband them. They had to be left at large, still armed with equipment that was their own, beyond control; and so whole provinces were subjected to the indiscriminate pillaging of soldiery that sought to claim a share in chivalry but whose manner of living was the antithesis of what chivalry stood for, the protection of the poor, the fatherless and the widow.

Knight’s Tale poses the pivotal question about war: Is there such a thing as civilized warfare, as war fought for a just cause in a controlled manner as a means of restoring order to society, or do all wars inevitably lead to acts of savagery and excess that make a mockery of policy?35 Ancient Thebes is the story of a sustained, sordid, brutal, and self-indulgent lust for power and pleasure eventuating in spectacular violence—Cadmus and the dragon-tooth warriors, Oedipus’s primal crimes against nature, Eteocles and Polynices’ impiety and fratricidal warfare, Creon’s desecration of his nephew’s corpse and subsequent murder of his niece Antigone. The idea of a moderate use of force to serve the common good is alien to the Theban legend. Statius considers the possibility of a good war by inserting the Athenian warlord Theseus into the myth of Thebes. Theseus brings peace to Thebes and, in Statius’s version of events, saves Antigone, but only after an unforgettable orgy of death has occurred. As discussed above, Chaucer returned to Statius’s brooding treatment of the Theban material in order to foreground it. He rereads the Teseida through the lens of the Thebaid, turning it from a conventional love story into a philosophical reflection on the nature of love, war, and governance—both earthly and cosmic. Indeed, it becomes a kind of theodicy, asking why humans must suffer so much and whether there is a benevolent order that transcends the individual ills of human experience, providing an origin for temporal governance. In this vein, Chaucer presents the stadium Theseus builds to hold the tournament as a theatrum mundi, a microcosmic space in which Theseus will try to civilize the unruly dispute between Palamon and Arcite, itself symbolic of the dynastic rivalry between Polynices and Eteocles. 36

Ominously, there is nothing to stop Theseus’s men from just such rapine, as he "dide with al the contree as hym leste" (line 1004).

For Chaucer, it seems it is not justice but fortune that decides the outcome of war. The eldest Argive widow reminds Theseus of the role of "Fortune" in war, and Chaucer returns to the idea of the uncertainty of military ventures in the temple of Mars murals, where an enthroned "Conquest" (line 2028) is depicted with the sharp sword of Damocles hanging over his head by the thinnest of threads. Perhaps Theseus learns this lesson, as he moves steadily away from militarism in Chaucer’s narrative, changing the rules of the tournament to prevent mortal combat and ending the strife with Thebes through the diplomacy of the parliament. Yet, even in the mock battle of the tournament, death cannot be prevented, despite his best efforts. Is Chaucer suggesting that the prospect of limited warfare for some greater purpose (in this case the eventual pacification of Thebes) is human folly?

Since the 2013 publication of Williams's and Srnicek's #Accelerate: Manifesto for an Accelerationist Politics, the term has been adopted to name a set of new theoretical enterprises that aim to conceptualise non-capitalist futures outside of traditional marxist critiques and regressive, decelerative or restorative solutions. #Accelerate presents a genealogy of accelerationism, tracking the impulse through 90s UK darkside cyberculture and the theory-fictions of Nick Land, Sadie Plant, Iain Grant, and anonymous units like CCRU and SWITCH, across the cultural underground of the 80s (rave, acid house, Terminator and Bladerunner) and back to its sources in delirious post-68 ferment, in texts whose searing nihilistic jouissance would later be disavowed by their authors and the marxist and academic establishment alike. On either side of this largely unexplored central sequence, the book includes texts by Marx that call attention to his own 'Prometheanism' and key works from recent years document the recent extraordinary emergence of new accelerationisms steeled against the onslaughts of neoliberal capitalist realism, and retooled for the twenty-first century. At the forefront of the energetic contemporary debate around this disputed, problematic term, #ACCELERATE activates a historical conversation about futurality, technology, politics, enjoyment and Kapital. This is a legacy shot through with contradictions, yet urgently galvanized today by the poverty of 'reasonable' contemporary political alternatives.

Guy Haley began his career on SFX Magazine in 1997 before leaving to edit Games Workshop’s White Dwarf, followed by the SF magazine Death Ray. Since 2009 he has been a wandering writer, working in both magazines and novels. He lives in Somerset with his wife and son, a malamute and a an enormous, evil-tempered Norwegian Forest Cat called, ironically, Buddy.

"Skarsnik, Skarsnik, Skarsnik!"

I DEVOURED this book. It's been a long time since I've felt such sheer joy reading. No doubt I am a bit biased because I've been a Warhammer Orcs and Goblins aficionado all my life, and I've been waiting for the Black Library to finally break down and throw us greenskin fans a bone. Well, SKARSNIK was more than just a bone, it was a meaty fleshroom banquet that answers all sorts of lingering questions about how greenskins survive, thrive, and, yes, even reproduce.

The heart of the story is the autobiography of Skarsnik, Warlord of Karak Eight Peaks, and the most powerful Night Goblin in history. His tale, though, is nestled like a matryoshka in a series of framing tale to the point where the reader is never quite sure how much of the account is true, how much is Skarsnik embellishing, how much is lost in the game of whisper-down-the-lane, and how much is just pure shaggy dog story. Skarsnik told Bickenstadt the mad playwright, Bickenstadt told Wollendorp the greenskin academic, and Wollendorp's story was recounted by the almost entirely offscreeen Guido Kleinfeld. At first I wasn't sure what the point was of having so many framing stories, but when Haley finally pulls the rug out from under you in the last chapter, I realized it wouldn't have the same impact any other way.

Still, at the core this is the story of a goblin, perhaps the greatest goblin of his age, but a goblin nonetheless. And in that Haley achieves something remarkable. He reclaims goblins from the ranks of comic relief and puts them on full display as sadistic, lunatic monsters and yet somehow still makes us root for one of them. Skarsnik's long, hard road from the runtiest of runts to the mightiest of warlords (cowing even Orc bosses like Gorfang Rotgut) is a fascinating ride. I can't recommend it highly enough for any fans of fantasy, but this should be mandatory reading for Warhammer Orc and Goblin players.

Comic relief turns out to be a sadistic, power mad little bastard!

Picked up Skarsnik on a dare (if such a think exists with Warhammer novels). There was a long plane ride ahead of me as well as another boring week in Canberra.
I had low expectations of the book honestly. Goblins have never been that exciting and I wasn't sure how the story would be written. Let me tell you that I was sadly mistaken and would warn others against making the same assumption.
The book is a riveting tale of one small Goblin's rise to power told in a most interesting fashion. At this point, I honestly don't want to give too much detail to spoil the story.
I will say that Skarsnik is a vile and evil little bastard and the book helps to reinforce the utter evil that Goblins really are. As a gamer I dismiss the Goblin race as comic relief; Skarsnik will change that. They are a race of lunatics driven by crazy sadistic urges. Their lives are often short and incredibly brutal. I have to admit that amongst the army of vicious little buggers I was still rooting for Skarsnik as the anti-protagonist ... an antagonist with no protagonist to go up against? Except for the rest of his race trying to kill or beat him into submission.

Thus far, the definitive examination of the mindset of the Greenskin race... and one helluva fun story! It's great for fantasy buffs that love Orcs, Orks, Goblins or any other creature like that. They aren't often featured in stories as they are usually used as punch lines. In this story, there is plenty of dark and snark humor... but it's the goblins at do as much of the punching as anyone else. For what it is, it's the best around.

About the Author
Don Keith is an award-winning broadcaster, a best-selling author, and has been a licensed amateur radio operator since 1961. He was first licensed as WN4BDW in 1961, earned his General class license later that year, and then became an Amateur Extra class licensee in the mid-1970s, changing the call sign to N4KC. He was twice named Billboard Magazine’s “Broadcast Personality of the Year,” won every major broadcast journalism award in his state from the Associated Press and United Press International, and was an on-air personality, journalist, station owner, program director, and manager in a broadcasting career that spanned over two decades. Don published his first novel, The Forever Season, in 1995. It has remained in print continuously since and was named “Fiction of the Year” by the Alabama Library Association. His more than two dozen other published works, fiction and non-fiction, cover such topics as NASCAR racing, broadcasting, college sports, submarines, biography, and World War II history. Don lives in Indian Springs, Alabama, with his wife, Charlene, has three grown children, and three grandchildren. He operates all the shortwave amateur radio bands as well as VHF and uses most modes, including CW, SSB, PSK31 and FM. He enjoys DXing, contesting, antenna experimenting, and just plain rag-chewing. "Strange News from Another Star" is a short fairy tale written by Hermann Hesse in April 1915, one year after the start of the 1st World War. In the fairy tale, two stars are juxtaposed.

On one star, life is valued, beauty is appreciated, reason is respected, humane traditions are cultivated, love and happiness are experienced and peace prevails.

On the other star, jealousy, hatred and despair are cultivated, wars are waged incessantly, battlefield murder is officially condoned, the countryside is left strewn with unattended cadavers and fear prevails.

The latter is clearly our world as Hesse saw it, rendered mythical, and the former is an idealized world that ours could be.

Unlike his earlier works, the story does not lend itself to rational interpretation. It is essentially a fairy tale dealing with the subconscious, magic and the dream world.

The fairy tale represents an intermediate stage between Hesse's initial ambiguous stance to the war, as an internationalist who tolerated war and a pacifist who looked forward to a German victory, and his later active anti-war campaign.

The story, which was titled “Merkwürdige Nachricht von einem anderen Stern” in German, was one of several that brought Hesse into conflict with supporters of the war, his country and its government.

There are several stories missing from the third edition that were in the previous edition. Including one of my favorites - Augustus.

Notes for those on a Spiritual Quest

These are some of the most spiritually awakened stories I have ever read. Fairy tales for grown ups, yet truly insightful and remarkable literature. I recommend these stories to everyone without reservation. Hesse is not just for teenagers with unfulfilled religious needs and spiritual curiosity. Read them!
