rip off, sorry but it's true.

While anything with Clavell's name attached to it is simply marvelous - and don't get me wrong, this is still a wonderful story - this is just the incomplete, chopped up, TV version of his incredible book 'Whirlwind.' There is nothing new; don't let the 'love story' bit fool you. Entire plots and characters are left out, or are mentioned only in passing. There is no intelligent reason to buy this book. Buy Whirlwind instead. Coronet Books has managed to take money from me for an incomplete version of a book I have already read. Disgusting. Three stars is very, very generous.

Watered down Whirlwind...

Unfortunately, James Clavell and his publisher fought during the last few years of his life. The result was that his final Asian saga novel, Whirlwind, is out of print. Escape is a watered down version of that novel, developed for a movie script. The core story is still there, but to get Clavell's intended story, buy Whirlwind at a used bookstore or online auction site.

Rarely, however, has she woven the two strands of her writing as tightly together as in this play in which one character, the Skriker, speaks long passages of Joycean (specifically, Finnegans Wake-ish) prose ("Heard her boast beast a roast beef eater, daughter could spin span spick and spun the lowest form of wheat straw into gold"), while the two others, Liz and Josie, both teenage girls, speak a very contemporary brand of English. This startling juxtaposition allows Churchill simultaneously to explore contemporary attitudes about the homeless and insane and tell a variation of the folktale about the malevolent, magical being that tries to trick a young woman out of her firstborn. The resulting play is rich, beautiful, and moving, though it may frustrate those who like their theater plain and simple. I believe The Skriker is Churchill's finest play, and I've read them all and seen a number of them. She has woven many of her recurring themes and motifs in this play to dazzling effect: magic and myth, time and timelessness, gender and womanhood, mothering, and the power of the theatre to transform. The play is witty and somber, reassuring and threatening, and brilliantly unpredictable throughout.

The Policy Making-Process is a classic primer on the policy making process in the United States. The author, Charles Lindblom is considered a classic thinker in American Policy, who emphasizes diversity in decision making in order to create "intelligence." In short, he advocates getting more people involed in the process, as well as soliciting a wider point of view.

Lindblom's work is very reader-friendly. It is short, to the point, and easy to read.

policy-making as a political counteraction

This book makes a comparison between effectiveness of analysis and play of power in making public policy. In this book, the author raises the hand of the play of power because he thinks that the most objective analysis also must be influenced by the opinion, selection and personality of policy analysis professionals. I agree. I believe that the human being is not the God. If there are socialists or analysis professionals say that they have perfect analysis, I regard them as ambitious people being eager to control and suppress the public under so-called the flag of truth. Therefore we have to find other ways in order to explain the policy making process. The author finds the way in the political counteraction among interests who are affected by the policy. He named this situation as the play of power. In this rule, they ultimately enjoyed the policy favoring them as everyone takes an effort to effect particular policy. He also argues that the inequality in the play of power is natural. Because there are many differences-for instance, organization, manpower, available money, accessibility to the policy-making process, etc-among social groups. Generally these differences are under hand of the elite and constantly are reproduced and reinforced by educational condition, wealth and socialization. Also he criticizes contradiction of the voting process. The reason is that there are many policies but voters have only one vote. He says, therefore voters are naturally excluded in the policy-making process. In this book, Lindblem shows his insight into policy-making process. Although he emphasizes the political counteraction in the policy-making process, he does not ignore the effectiveness. What he really emphasizes is the harmony between analytical and political approach. When we look at the policy-making through this harmony between two opinions, we will reach the real understanding of one. But he leaves difficult problem to us. That is a solution about overcoming the inequality in the policy-making.

When getting there was more than half the fun!

Having been an antique dealer, I sold a number of those handsome old steamer trunks. The ones that still had a few hotel labels affixed always commanded a premium. Seeing those old labels couldn't help but conjure up thoughts of the golden age of the passenger liner and all that mode of transit entailed. Unfortunately, those were not my own personal recollections as I am a couple of generations removed from such experiences. Barring the last chapter, of course, the whole Titanic story drew further attention to that memorable and romantic method of travel. Those colorful little labels evoked all that fascination and more.

I can't imagine anyone better suited to have put this collection together that Mr. Vuitton. Being at the height of his career during the heyday of this "Golden Era" and in an industry catering to the wealthiest of travelers it was a natural fit. It appears he solicited help from many of his friends, and I would guess hotel staff, in the expansion of his hobby. Thankfully, Francisca Matteoli has selected a number of these gems and made them available to us in this recently published book.

My first reaction when seeing this volume on Amazon's recommended list was that, given its dimensions, it seemed a bit pricey. Now that I've had a chance to examine it, "up-close and personal", I can see that the price is certainly justified. This book is very well produced. The binding is quite handsome and the paper selected is perfect for the subject matter. I am rather glad they didn't choose to publish this book in a coffee-table format. The smaller size still easily fits several labels per page and it rests much more comfortably in one's lap. (note: sandwiched in between several of the pages are beautifully reproduced vintage postcards further enhancing this books appeal)

There are hundreds of these miniature works of art on display in this 500+ page study - enough to satisfy even the most advanced enthusiast. If you have in interest in graphic arts, travel or just a fondness for early 1900s nostalgia this work is guaranteed to please. A noteworthy contribution to a field long in need of such attention

A lovely and extensive selection of labels

This book is really sumptuous! It's filled with a huge & beautiful selection of vintage hotel labels and it even has some (copies of) old postcards. If you love ephemera, you can't help but love this book.
