God, Doctor Buzzard, and the Bolito Man: A Saltwater Geechee Talks about Life on Sapelo Island, by Christena Bledsoe, Cornelia Walker Bail

In this beautiful cultural memoir, Sapelo Island native Cornelia Walker Bailey tells the fascinating history of her remarkable and threatened Georgia homeland. Off the coast of Georgia, a small close-knit community of African Americans traces their lineage to enslaved West Africans. Living on a barrier island in almost total isolation, the people of Sapelo have been able to do what most others could not: They have preserved many of the folkways of their forebears in West Africa, believing in "signs and spirits and all kinds of magic."

Cornelia Walker Bailey, a direct descendant of Bilali, the most famous and powerful enslaved African to inhabit the island, is the keeper of cultural secrets and the sage of Sapelo. In words that are poetic and straight to the point, she tells the story of her Sapelo--including the Geechee belief in the equal power of God, "Dr. Buzzard" (voodoo), and the "Bolito Man" (luck).

But her tale is not without peril, for the old folkways are quickly slipping away. The elders are dying, the young must leave the island to go to school and to find work, and the community's ability to live on the land is in jeopardy. The State of Georgia owns nine-tenths of the land and the pressure on the inhabitants is ever-increasing.
Cornelia Walker Bailey is determined to save the community, but time will tell whether the people of Sapelo will be able to retain the land, and the treasured culture which their forebears bestowed upon them more than two hundred years ago.

Amazon.com Review
It has been said that the Africans who were brought to the United States as slaves were completely stripped of their native culture. But pioneering scholars such as anthropologist Melville Herskovits have disproved this in academia, while the literature of Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison has also debunked this persistent myth. Living proof of that fact is Sapelo Island, a South Sea island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, where West African traditions persist despite considerable odds. This vivid memoir by Cornelia Walker Bailey, a lecturer and tour guide on Sapelo Island, transports the reader to this enchanted land of miracles and magic.

Walker is a self-described "Geechee," a descendant of Islamic African slaves taken from modern-day Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (she traces her family lineage on the island back to 1803). In God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man, the author brings alive a land where black people speak an African-based Creole language, believe in "mojo" (the American equivalent of Haitian voodoo), and who work to keep their culture alive. "You can think of the Africans as being victims, and in a sense they were" she writes. "But they were also great survivors. If they survived the Middle Passage, and a lot of people didn't, then they survived everything thrown at them. They were determined people." Thanks in large part to Bailey, this determination lives on. But her book, which recalls life on Sapelo Island from the 1940s and rings with the same ebullient language found in Jean Toomer's Cane, also serves as a warning, noting that outside business interests and the disinterest of the youth threaten the very existence of their ancient ways. "We need to be proud of our ancestors from slavery days and of our old people who went through modern hardships and to learn from them that if you believe in something, strength comes from that." With this book, she hopes to pass some of that strength on. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
In a delightful, sincere memoir, born storyteller Bailey reveals the shadows of a little-known culture that is increasingly threatened by encroaching developers. Her tiny community of "salt water geechees" on Sapelo Island, off the Georgia coast, consists of the survivors of slave families who believe in the power of God, the "root doctor" and the numbers runner, hence the title. Bailey's own family is directly descended from the African Muslim, Bilali (or Bul-Allah), who founded their community. Many of their traditions can be traced to Africa, as Bailey discovered when she traveled there as an adult. Entertaining and mystifying, her reflections on growing up geechee evidence a healthy respect for the supernatural: on Sapelo, the living are seen to coexist with the spirits of the dead; a curse could lead a person to ruin; and every dream is significant. Bailey herself "died" as a child; her coffin was later used to store her mother's linens when she inexplicably recovered. Bailey's most terrifying reflections, however, concentrate upon the days of slavery and the Jim Crow culture that replaced it. In the decades that followed, Bailey's own father was cheated out of the family homestead by a henchman of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds, according to the author. One indelible image is that of her father reknotting his net, as the family sits at the hearth to watch, before he goes night fishing to feed them. In writing that is both unadorned and poetic, Bailey's soft Southern wit shines through, resonating with humor and charm. Readers enthralled by anthropology and African-American life will not want to put this book down. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
With a population under 75 individuals, Sapelo Island has received excellent attention recently as a bastion of African American culture. As a descendant of former slaves who originally populated the island, Bailey gives an extremely personal view of Geechee/Gullah culture, which intertwines remnants of West African belief systems with coastal Georgian influences. Her prose style (with the assistance of author Bledsoe) makes for a memorable read as she explains the intricate relationship between God, "Dr. Buzzard" (voodoo), and the "Bolito Man" (luck) as they clash with modern ways that have lead to the rapid disintegration of this once vibrant community. Bailey's new work is highly recommended as a companion volume to historian William McFeely's "outsider" text, Sapelo's People (LJ 5/1/94) and Julie Dash's film Daughters of the Dust (1991), which also treats the Sea Islands.DAnthony J. Spellbinding in more ways than one.
By A Customer
This book is spellbinding in more ways than one. In this modern era of homogenized mass-market culture, it's refreshing to learn that there are still people in this country who are different and who are rich in ways that have nothing to do with money. It may have taken Cornelia Bailey half her life to discover that she was to be the storyteller of her people, but she's made up for lost time - she seems born to it, as well as being a living encyclopedia of the history and lore of one of the truly unique places and truly distinctive cultures in America. At times her words ring with a cadence and spirituality of a faraway time and setting, but neither are so remote as they first seem. Only All God's Dangers, the National Book Award winning oral history of Alabama sharecropper Nate Shaw, compares in its reduction to writing of the voice of an African-American community and way of life, but the similarity stops there. The map at the front of the book shows her home, Sapelo Island, to be at best only fifteen miles long, but it was (and still is in many respects) a whole universe to its people, and two centuries of isolation led to the development of a culture and language that is more closely tied to Africa than any other in the United States. Through all those years, thanks to their storyteller, we know that the "Saltwater Geechees" made for themselves a fascinating world with one foot on solid ground and the other deep in mysticism. The book is also first-rate social history. The story of Sapelo and its people may be a microcosm of the struggle of African-American people to cope with the ordeal of slavery and the outrages of the Jim Crow era, but it has the added turn of their being subjected to the machinations of Twentieth Century tycoons with dreams of creating feudal baronies on their secluded island. It was a war that has had more than a few casualties, and one that is far from over, with the nabobs being replaced by bureaucrats in khaki shirts and green pants, but you get the feeling that, with people like Cornelia Bailey manning the gates, the Geechees left on Sapelo will see the latest edition of "buckra" off the island like all who came and went before. Along the journey upon which she takes us we discover the beauty, mystery, and tragedy of a place and people that few ever heard of and none will soon forget. But as sobering as much of that trip is, we also get to laugh. A lot. It's clear that Ms. Bailey had a twinkle in her eye and enjoyed relating these tales almost as much as I enjoyed reading them.

A magical book to read and re-read.
By A Customer
Part memoir, part cultural history, part plea on behalf of a fragile culture, God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man is as affecting as the best magic realism. You do not simply read it, you savor it and absorb it into your very soul.
In the book, Cornelia Bailey, resident griot of Sapelo Island off the Georgia coast, spins the story of her growing up in that place and in a time when lives were governed equally by religion, magic, and chance. She admits us deep into the culture of her proud people and introduces us to folkways strong enough to have survived the Middle Passage and the centuries since. So it is with infinite sadness we learn that the forces of progress are rendering these same folkways as fragile as a paper-thin fig shell that washes onto the beach.
It goes without saying that God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man will appeal to cultural historians, anthropologists, naturalists, and environmentalists. The book's strongest appeal, however, will be to lovers of lyrical prose -- and to anyone who delights in the sheer magic of the way words fall on the ear and follow one another on a page.
This is a special book, one that should find a home on every reader's short shelf of well-thumbed volumes that are read and referenced time and again.

Bailey touches the heart with her personal memior
By A Customer
God , Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man carries the reader off into the world where knowing one's history, listening to folktales, and sharing a sense of humor are key to a child's up-bringing on the tiny yet proud Sea Island of Sapelo Island, GA. Cornelia Bailey's voice as a native and oral historian of one of Georgia's Sea Islands is both descriptive and informative for the adult and novice reader. As a young girl Cornelia grasps what it means to be young, old, or an outsider of the U.S. "mainland". She sees firsthand how the elders in her community, often in the midst of confrontation, overcome economic barriers and obstacles. Many hold on to their land after the destruction of the Civil War, but more importantly they hold on to a sense of pride, due to the customs, beliefs, and traditions thier forefathers brought over on the slave ships off the coast of West Africa. Cornelia shares the secrets of her surroundings among family and friends in this heartwarming memior of the Sapelo Island community.
I highly recommend this book to those who know little about American and African-American history,to historians, and also to those who are a fan of the Bre'r Rabbit folktales.

A Must Have

I bought this to get me started on my new instrument. I play guitar but am troubled by the weight. Still wanting to play music, I opted for the clarinet. This book and its dvd/cd helps make the process of learning easy and fun. The lessons are paced well and new notes are introduced progressively and sequentially. A great starter book for amatuers or beginners that can be used to get anyone well on their way. I recommend it fully.

Excellent starter.
By Geirskogul
Ah, Essential Elements 2000. Along with Accent on Achievement, B flat Clarinet Book 1, it's one of the great starter books to help you learn any instrument. I though the book was excellent as-is, but about halfway through I popped the included DVD into my computer, and found a myriad of useful (if a bit outdated) software. It comes with one called "SmartMusic EE Band" that includes computerized (yet printable) sheet music for almost any instrument, an electronic tuner that lets you know how close to the notes you're actually playing, computerized accompaniment software (that speeds up and slows according to you!), and clickable notes (you can click on them and see the fingering(s) available)! A great product gets a high-tech "sister book," so-to-speak, and makes learning the clarinet even more insightful.

Review
“What a treat to have another Gilman novel—until now largely ignored—available. We are indebted to Duke University Press for publishing it as a separate piece and to Dana Seitler for her provocative and stimulating introduction. The Crux is in many ways a period piece embodying what today seems outmoded and sometimes outrageous views. Oddly, these same views are also startlingly and wickedly relevant today.”—Ann J. Lane, author of To Herland and Beyond: The Life and Work of Charlotte Perkins Gilman

“With reproductive technologies at the center of feminist, medical, and national debate, The Crux offers a fascinating historical perspective on the relationship of reproduction and nationalism. Dana Seitler's introduction offers a useful context in which to read Charlotte Perkins Gilman's quirky, biology-based feminism, her depiction of a women's community in the west, and, generally, the relationship between fiction-writing and the fashioning of gender roles that fueled Gilman's particular brand of activism.”—Priscilla Wald, author of Constituting Americans: Cultural Anxiety and Narrative Form

About the Author
harlotte Perkins Gilman (July 3, 1860 – August 17, 1935) was a prominent American feminist, sociologist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and a lecturer for social reform. She was a utopian feminist during a time when her accomplishments were exceptional for women, and she served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis. t the age of five, Gilman taught herself to read because her mother was ill. Her mother was not affectionate with her children. To keep them from getting hurt as she had been, she forbade her children to make strong friendships or read fiction. In her autobiography, The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Gilman wrote that her mother showed affection only when she thought her young daughter was asleep. Although she lived a childhood of isolated, impoverished loneliness, she unknowingly prepared herself for the life that lay ahead by frequently visiting the public library and studying ancient civilizations on her own. Additionally, her father's love for literature influenced her, and years later he contacted her with a list of books he felt would be worthwhile for her to read. Much of Gilman's youth was spent in Providence, Rhode Island. What friends she had were mainly male, and she was unashamed, for her time, to call herself a "tomboy." She attended seven different public schools, and was a correspondent student of the Society to Encourage Studies at Home but studied only until she was fifteen. Her natural intelligence and breadth of knowledge always impressed her teachers, who were nonetheless disappointed in her because she was a poor student. Her favorite subject was "natural philosophy," especially what later would become known as physics. In 1878, the eighteen-year-old enrolled in classes at the Rhode Island School of Design with the monetary help of her absent father, and subsequently supported herself as an artist of trade cards. She was a tutor, and encouraged others to expand their artistic creativity. She was also a painter. In 1884, she married the artist Charles Walter Stetson after initially declining his proposal because a gut feeling told her it was not the right thing for her. Their only child, Katharine Beecher Stetson.

Essential, entertaining reading for Gilman fans
By A Customer
The Crux is essential reading for anyone seriously interested in the writings of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Jennifer S. Tuttle's is to be commended for bringing it to readers in this excellent edition. After having read most of Gilman's other fiction, I will admit that I put off reading this one because of its reputation as "the book about venereal disease" (sexually transmitted diseases). I feared it would be didactic, heavy handed, and depressing. Instead, it's like the best of Gilman's "optimistic reform" books: it treats its serious subject with a light touch, conveying its important ideas through appealing characters and a strong plot with Gilman's typical "happy ending." (Some readers might argue that the ending is a bit implausible, but that's part of the interest of this set of Gilman's writings.) At times, it is laugh-out-loud funny. Also, it's not entirely accurate to say that the book is "about" venereal disease, for although the last third of the book discusses the dangers women faced from sexually transmitted diseases in the years before adequate cures had been discovered, there is much more to the story. It portrays the opportunities for self discovery open to women who move from the stultifying conditions of New England villages to the open life in a new city in the Colorado mountains. The women characters (on whom the story focuses) range from young unmarried women to a seemingly dried-up old maid, a woman doctor, and one of literature's most delightful grandmothers.
My only serious objection to this edition is that University of Delaware Press, for some unaccountable reason, has elected to publish this book only in an expensive hardback edition. The story, along with Tuttle's illuminating introduction and clear explanatory notes, would be highly suitable as a teaching text if the book were available in a reasonably-priced paper edition.

Should be studied more often
By Monica Rico
_The Crux_ isn't "great literature" but it is well worth reading for the insight into Charlotte Perkins Gilman's thinking about sexuality, gender, and health. In this text, you can trace some of the elements of her belief in eugenics, intertangled with her conviction that women should have satisfying careers and independent lives. In other words, as with so many of Gilman's contemporaries, the ideas that we think of as "progressive" and "reactionary" were, in this era, mutually constitutive. _The Crux_ makes for fascinating reading and lively discussion.

Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman ...
By Liz C
This is a fairly quick read of a book, longer than Gilman's usual short story, but not something that would take weeks to read either. This particular copy is a bit different than most books. This one is a reprint of a "historic book" which in this case seems to mean the original page numbers happen to be in the middle of paragraphs, sentences and sometimes even words. It's a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it after a page or two. Each page is laid out in three columns, and the whole thing is the size of a composition notebook, though not nearly as thick. If that layout would distract you, there are other printings available in "regular" paperback size, some are even anthologies. Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman went with her various works.

Van Gogh on Demand: China and the Readymade, by Winnie Wong

In a manufacturing metropolis in south China lies Dafen, an urban village that famously houses thousands of workers who paint van Goghs, Da Vincis, Warhols, and other Western masterpieces for the world market, producing an astonishing five million paintings a year. To write about work and life in Dafen, Winnie Wong infiltrated this world, first investigating the work of conceptual artists who made projects there; then working as a dealer; apprenticing as a painter; surveying wholesalers and retailers in Europe, East Asia and North America; establishing relationships with local leaders; and organizing a conceptual art exhibition for the Shanghai World Expo. The result is Van Gogh on Demand, a fascinating book about a little-known aspect of the global art world—one that sheds surprising light on the workings of art, artists, and individual genius. Confronting big questions about the definition of art, the ownership of an image, and the meaning of originality and imitation, Wong describes an art world in which idealistic migrant workers, lofty propaganda makers, savvy dealers, and international artists make up a global supply chain of art and creativity. She examines how Berlin-based conceptual artist Christian Jankowski, who collaborated with Dafen’s painters to reimagine the Dafen Art Museum, unwittingly appropriated the work of a Hong Kong-based photographer Michael Wolf. She recounts how Liu Ding, a Beijing-based conceptual artist, asked Dafen “assembly-line” painters to perform at the Guangzhou Triennial, neatly styling himself into a Dafen boss. Taking the Shenzhen-based photojournalist Yu Haibo’s award-winning photograph from the Amsterdam's World Press Photo organization, she finds and meets the Dafen painter pictured in it and traces his paintings back to an unlikely place in Amsterdam. Through such cases, Wong shows how Dafen’s painters force us to reexamine our preconceptions about creativity, and the role of Chinese workers in redefining global art. Providing a valuable account of art practices in an ascendant China, Van Gogh on Demand is a rich and detailed look at the implications of a world that can offer countless copies of everything that has ever been called “art.”

Review
“Van Gogh on Demand shines. . . . [A]  fantastically detailed exploration of a topic which touches the heart of many of the issues surrounding China's economic rise.” (South China Morning Post)

"An impressive investigation." (Fine Art Connoiseur)

“One of the most intriguing reads of the year. . . . “[Wong] has done extensive research and taken the conversation beyond the stereotypes being peddled in the media and even in some contemporary art projects.”  (Hyperallergic)

“A penetrating analysis of how the artistic theories of the Duchampian ready-made and their successors in conceptual art practice outside China can be applied to illuminate the history of these Chinese production processes which reciprocally bring the notion of ready-made into focus. . . . An important and valuable book, the first on a long-neglected subject.”
(China Information)

“A fascinating blend of ethnography and art history.”
(Art Practical)

“Based on a thoughtful reading of modern and contemporary art theory, lengthy fieldwork, and practical artistic and curatorial engagement with the world of Dafen artists, Van Gogh on Demand addresses some of the most demanding—and not easily resolved—issues of culture and production. Wong skillfully untangles the complicated skein of interconnections between the realms of traditional practice, contemporary Chinese art, mass-scale production, copying, and art circulation in the global marketplace. Compelling, fluent, and highly quotable, this book is a major contribution to the study of China, modernism, postmodernism, and globalization.” (Geremie Barme, Australian National University)

“Vividly describing a place that is amazing to learn about and fascinating as a story, Van Gogh on Demand is so engagingly written that we are drawn from chapter to chapter in a state of increasing interest that often turns to excitement. Wong tells us much not only about the highly specific kind of artistic production that prevails at Dafen, but also about the international art world and the role of Dafen in the kind of contemporary modernity that China is striving to construct. The convergence of these different worlds is thoroughly and brilliantly shown to throw a fresh light on postmodern appropriation, quotation, and irony. These insights make this book both a persuasive piece of participant observation cultural anthropology and an original instance of contemporary art historical writing.” (Terry Smith, University of Pittsburgh)

Humor, philosophy, anecdotes - and the difficulty of scholarly prose
By Amazon Customer
Background: for last Christmas, I bought my 4-year-old grandson a "hand-painted van Gogh," Harvest at La Crau, with Montmajour in the Background. The original is 72 x 92cm; Ben's copy is 8x10 in. His pre-school teacher had presented several weeks on painting (you have to assume there were no details on a biography unsuited to pre-school), and Ben for whatever reason responded fervently to van Gogh. I wanted him to see the dimension of paint on canvas and I received two gifts from him -- he immediately ran his fingers over the impasto surface, again and again; then he asked that the picture be hung, right then, in his bedroom.

Ben's copy came from China, probably from Dafen Village, which is the setting of Ms. Wong's treatise. That's the setting: the *subject* would have to be summarized as "Challenge everything you ever assumed about art, the artist, creativity, originality, Chinese social structure and politics, and WalMart."

When I ordered the book, five months before it got far enough into production to reach my door, I wanted a popular explication of how (possibly) thousands of painters produce many tens of thousands per year of van Goghs, Utrillos, da Vincis, Bougereaus... well, virtually any famous artist you want to name.

What I got instead is a mix: insightful anecdotes from conversations with painters and bosses; compelling discussions of painting factory methods and organization (many exploitative, some humanistic, avuncular); massive tugs at assumptions around originality; and, frankly, boring excursions into angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin types of things.

Anecdotes? While watching one, er, artist (re-)producing one of van Gogh's sunflower paintings, the artist stood back toward the end, then said, "Time to sign it." Ms. Wong pointed out that van Gogh had not signed the original. The artist: "Oh. You own one?"

Sort-of an anecdote: Ms. Wong quotes from the marketing copy of a van Gogh reproduction sold by Amserdam's van Gogh Museum: "It seemed a dream, but this replica makes it possible: a painting [in reality an inkjet - glicee - print] by Vincent van Gogh on the living room wall, and almost indistinguishable from the real thing... This amazing reproduction is delivered rolled-up, affordable and safe, just as van Gogh sent his own canvases to Paris."

Anecdote: A Dafen van Gogh artist who, chafing under the low wages, exclaimed that he was not making much more than van Gogh did.

Anecdote: Always open about her objective to study Dafen for scholarly purpose, Ms. Wong was interviewing one artist, who pointed out that he was also an "excellent and prolific writer." "...since he had been in Dafen far longer than I, it would be much easier for him to write my dissertation for me.... In the hands of Dafen painters and bosses [and writers], it [ghost-painting, ghost-writing] is a habitual and ubiquitous phenomenon, and recalls a condition in which painting and writing do not constitute any sort of special labor...."

One commentator on the Dafen scene wrote, "I realized that most of Dafen painters remained kind of detached and regarded painting more as a labor job." Of course, for hundreds, maybe even thousands of Europeans artists prior to the Romantic age, painting *was* a "labor job," and not a sort of special labor.

Throughout you'll all sorts of tweaks, all sorts of unanswered and possibly unanswerable questions. For the most part, this book is a sort of high-level page-turner. All this said, however, there are times that I wish a competent copy editor had made some suggestions -- and that Ms. Wong had complied. Take that last sentence in my final anecdote above: could it not be expressed less syllabically: "In the hands of Dafen painters and bosses [and writers], it [ghost-painting, ghost-writing] is ubiquitous. For them, there is no special labor in painting and writing."

Scholarly language aside, what happens when -- the very thing we conceptualize as golden fruit of glorious individual vision -- Art becomes a mass-produced object on an assembly line? Is it automatically schlock?

Ben's little van Gogh is all master strokes done by a master hand with crystal-clear colors. It is, as Ben immediately saw, equally beautiful to both the eye and the hand.

Lawfare: The War Against Free Speech: A First Amendment Guide for Reporting in an Age of Islamist Lawfare, by Brooke M Goldstein, Aaron Ei

The free speech rights of authors, researchers and journalists writing on issues of public security and national concern are increasingly under attack through both violent and non-violent means. An important non-violent challenge to free speech has emerged in the form of “Islamist lawfare,” the use of the law as a weapon of war to silence and punish free speech about militant Islam, terrorism and its sources of financing.

The strategic end of Islamist lawfare is to further the goals of the Islamist movement, one of which is to abolish public discourse critical of Islam and punish anything deemed blasphemous to its prophet, Mohammad. Another goal of Islamist lawfare is to impede the free flow of public information about the threat of Islamist terrorism, thereby limiting our ability to understand it and destroy it. In this way, Islamist lawfare takes the form of a complementary legal campaign to terrorism and asymmetric warfare.

Lawfare: The War Against Free Speech– written by two of America’s experts in this field– describes this phenomenon and gives practical guidance about navigating this new terrain to journalists who wish to speak truthfully about the national security threats we face.

This book is a must-read primer on the First Amendment, and should be reviewed by anyone writing about the most controversial topics of our time.

Aaron Eitan Meyer and Brooke Goldstein present Lawfare Against Free Speech: A First Amendment Guide to Reporting in an Age of Islamist Lawfare, the first book of its kind aimed at giving practical tips to journalists when writing about these topics.

Lawyers, Guns and Money
By PoliticalWarfare
This book explains one of the more esoteric of the operational arts, which is legal subversion. Originally authored as a contextual legal resource, the book picks up speed using illustrative chapters later in the book to drive home the reality of this phenomenon. The contemporary sampling of threats is substantial and always grounded in American Constitutional principles. Those looking for rhetorical Islam bashing will not find it here. Instead, readers will find a thoughtful book, which has been organized to maximize its utility for Legislators, Policy Makers and Intelligence Professionals working in the National Security domain.

A true gem
By LindaK
Brooke and Aaron have hit the mark with this ground-breaking gem, a seminal work that offers a comprehensive yet concise look at recent threats to free speech by opponents of freedom and liberty. Meticulously researched and cited, Lawfare serves as a rich resource for attorneys and a usable guide for journalists and free speech proponents. It is recommended reading for Americans and our allies in democracy and human rights, to bring the world up to speed on this component of the virulent threat facing our way of life.

I don't believe anyone, except our enemies will be disappointed by reading this book.

Excerpt from Oxford Lectures on Poetry

This volume consists of lectures delivered during my tenure of the Chair of Poetry at Oxford and not included in Shakespearean Tragedy. Most of them have been enlarged, and all have been revised. As they were given at intervals, and the majority before the publication of that book, they contained repetitions which I have not found it possible wholly to remove. Readers of a lecture published by the University of Manchester on English Poetry and German Philosophy in the Age of Wordsworth will pardon also the restatement of some ideas expressed in it.

The several lectures are dated, as I have been unable to take account of most of the literature on their subjects published since they were delivered.

They are arranged in the order that seems best to me, but it is of importance only in the case of the four which deal with the poets of Wordsworth's time.

The master critic on Shakespeare, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth
By Shalom Freedman
This set of essays by the master Shakespeare critic A.C. Bradley contains essays on :Poetry for Poetry's Sake, The Sublime, Hegel's Theory of Tragedy, Wordsworth, Shelley's View of Poetry, The Long Poem in the Age of Wordsworth, The Letters of Keats, The Rejection of Falstaff, Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare the Man, Shakespeare's Theatre and Audience.
I especially enjoyed the essay on Keats where Bradley focuses on the meaning of Beauty in Keats' letters. His appreciation of the remarkable character of Keats and how this is reflected both in the Letters and the Poems is instructive. The essay on Shakespeare the Man I found a bit speculative , yet another attempt to say something about the character of the character who mastered and made so many different characters. It is interesting that Bradley believes that Shakespeare is the poet who best exemplified Keats' prescription for what a poet ideally should be, one whose negative capability means he is within and without all the characters he creates. The essay on Wordsworth focuses on his originality especially in finding in the simplicities of daily life, and in simple characters the deepest expressions of human soul.
But there is much more than I have indicated here . This is a classic set of essays by one of the English literary traditions, most important critics.

A C Bradley at his best
By Victor a levi
I am a fan of the writings of A C Bradley, in my mind the finest critic of William Shakespeare. As opposed to "Shakesperean Tragedy". his epic, this book contains criticism of authors other than Shakespeare, although his criticism of Anthony and Cleopatra is superb. Any one who enjoys Shakesperean criticism will, I think, find much to enjoy in this book.

so educatioal and socially relevant
By OneAnaconda
Lawson proves that his approach is "no nonsense" and that he is not trying just to sell you his book over another book on the subject. He details history and approaches to weaving a story and plot and challenges the writer to create character actions that are not able to be questioned as to why those actions were taken. His approach to presenting the social necessity prompting actions that change the lives not only of characters but the world around them is quite informative. Learning that the obligatory scene is not the climax and that what authors choose for the climax usually is not supported by adequate causes for such actions taken is priceless for a developing writer.
I continue to read the book over and over again and always get new insights into the craft of playwriting.

required reading for playwrights and screenwriters
By skeptic
I've never understood why this book isn't more well-known. Lawson was a gifted dramatist, and his Theory and Technique of Playwriting contains a great deal of invaluable, detailed nuts-and-bolts information about the craft that screenwriters and playwrights won't find anywhere else. It may not be a breezy read, but it's every bit as worthwhile as titles by Egri, Field, and others.
