Just as we need to know that it is the function of the heart to pump blood to know that a good heart is one that pumps blood successfully, so we need to know what the function of an action is in order to know what counts as a good or bad action. Drawing on the work of Plato, Aristotle, and Kant, Korsgaard proposes that the function of an action is to constitute the agency and therefore the identity of the person who does it. As rational beings, we are aware of, and therefore in control of, the principles that govern our actions. A good action is one that constitutes its agent as the autonomous and efficacious cause of her own movements. These properties correspond, respectively, to Kant's two imperatives of practical reason. Conformity to the categorical imperative renders us autonomous, and conformity to the hypothetical imperative renders us efficacious. And in determining what effects we will have in the world, we are at the same time determining our own identities. Korsgaard develops a theory of action and of interaction, and of the form interaction must take if we are to have the integrity that, she argues, is essential for agency. On the basis of that theory, she argues that only morally good action can serve the function of action, which is self-constitution.

About the Author

Christine M. Korsgaard earned her B.A. at the University of Illinois in 1974, her Ph.D. at Harvard University, where she studied with John Rawls, in 1981, and an LHD at the University of Illinois in 2004. She is currently Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University. She works on moral philosophy and its history, practical reason, agency, personal identity, and the relations between human beings and the other animals.

Beautifully written and miraculously lucid exposition of Kantian rationalism

Korsgaard is to my mind (though not mine alone) the world's greatest living expositor of the Kantian ethical tradition. This book wipes away, in effortless prose, many of the misconceptions about Kant that his own difficult, often obscure language helped to create. Korsgaard tackles most of the criticisms of Kant that people muster when rejecting his ideas: his rigorism, his denial of self-interest, his subordination of pleasure, the emptiness of his formalism, his sacralization of reason. While sensitive to why these criticisms have occurred to so many people, Korsgaard demonstrates in careful step-by-step explication of Kant's dominant concerns--self-constitution, the commitment to freedom, and the inseparability of these ideas--how thoroughly beside the point most anti-Kantian objections have been. I should know; as a diehard, lifelong utilitarian with a stiff empiricist spine, I have always found Kant a "turnoff." Korsgaard's book persuades me that my long-held views of Kant have been deeply mistaken. In that regard (a small regard, but not an insignificant one), it has been genuinely life-changing.

Strong presentation

You can read this. It is not encumbered with asides about who thinks her arguments miss somehow; she just makes her case following --as she thinks--Kant and Aristotle. Strong presentation which is not afraid to address problems. Very good book.

Beautiful Book

I had been wanting this book for a long time, and now that I finally have it, I'm in love with it. The artwork is gorgeous, it was one of the things that stuck with me even after I finished the game, and having it all compiled in this book is fantastic. The lore and excerpts were great, I absolutely love the world of Dishonored. It's one of my favorite games ever, and this book is a true gem that I am delighted to have on my shelf. I'm even more excited for Dishonored 2 now! I NEED IT!!

Revisit Dunwall again

[[VIDEOID:37798b15f453910d588edef43693bbbf]]Dishonored: The Dunwall Archives is a nice companion book that adds to the story of Dishonored through excerpts gathered from individuals from Dunwall and other sources.

The book's a hardcover somewhere between A4 and A5 size. The 212 pages are filled with a mixture of artworks and text.

The excerpts could be stuff like lyrics to the songs sang by sailors, dialogue from a theatre plays, observations from travelers' journals, Overseer's findings, etc. All these provide pieces of information that adds to the world created by the game. You'll be able to learn more about certain people, government officials, the Empress, Rat Plague, whaling or even how to operate a butcher's saw. Basically, you get a different perspective of how things are, the other side of the story as told from various sources.

The artworks are wonderful. Unfortunately, there isn't a dedicated artbook for the game, so you'll have to make do with the selected pieces of artworks included in this book, which are mostly full coloured concept art.

It's an interesting book of art and fiction of Dunwall by Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks. Recommended to Dishonored fans.

This is not an art book

Seems Arkane Studios is gonna keep the game's breathtakingly beautiful artworks in their vault for longer time. This is not an art book, this is a novel-size essay collection with pictures, basically 50% texts, 50% artworks. It includes the notes and novels you can find in the game, printing them nicely in this book.

Pros
- High-quality printing
- Contains a few artworks and texts that never seen before

Cons
- This is NOT an art book T_T

Though it's the only official Dishonored print available. Still Love it.

Silverton, who hails from the renowned Los Angeles bakery for which this book is named, goes back to square one in Breads for the La Brea Bakery: the yeast. While commercial yeast may work, using it doesn't really get to the essence of good bread or good bread making. Her book describes the two-week process required to create a starter the old-fashioned way. Once that is done, there are breads, pretzels, bagels, and a host of other good things to bake.

Bread is beautiful when it is made with time, care and honest ingredients; the same is true of cookbooks, and this is a beautiful cookbook. Silverton, a world-class pastry chef and owner of L.A.'s Campanile restaurant and La Brea Bakery, offers breadmaking instructions so meticulous that one gets the feeling she's divulging valuable trade secrets. Her breads are sourdough breads that depend on sourdough starter, a simple combination of flour and water left out where it can catch wild yeasts. Silverton explains the 14-day, once-in-a-lifetime process of creating the starter and the ongoing process of maintaining it. She then describes the starter and its variations and shows how they can be incorporated into a variety breads. Silverton and her husband (Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton at Home, LJ 2/15/94) are the chef/owners of Campanile restaurant and La Brea Bakery in Los Angeles. Silverton is a talented baker, both of sweets (Desserts by Nancy Silverton, HarperCollins, 1986) and savory baked goods. Here she offers the recipes for her popular breads and her extensive knowledge of bread baking. The subtitle might be "for the dedicated connoisseur" because every recipe but one relies on a basic starter that takes 14 days to get going (intended to be a one-time undertaking) and three "feedings" daily to maintain it, but ambitious bakers will certainly want to try Silverton's recipes. Others will find Amy Scherber and Toy Kim Dupree's Amy's Bread (LJ 4/15/96) a more accessible approach to the secrets of artisan baking, but the two books complement each other well, and Silverton's is another valuable addition to this growing genre. Highly recommended.

Best Bread

I have been a fan of the La Brea Bakery's bread for many years. I have tried many bread recipes at home, but none compare to Nancy Silverton's recipes from her La Brea Bakery. Many will say that this book is not for beginning bread bakers. This is probably true. I belive you should try baking with commercial "instant" or "Active" yeast before you try her methods. All her bread is made with a natural sourdough starter that takes two weeks to create, and requires daily feeding. The result is the best bread on earth. It is a lot of work. I end up baking more than I can eat, but my friends and family benefit from this. The recipes in this book take time: In most cases two days before a loaf is completed. It is worth it. Just schedule your time around the dough rising periods.

For the hardcore, the dedicated and the driven

This is an excellent book for those who wish to pursue baking bread armed with technical and practical information in addition to their own yeast starters.
I have yet to encounter a book that provides so much information on the making of bread and using of natural yeast starters. This is not a book for those who expect to do quick breads. For the person who wants to know how to make artisan breads at home this book is for you.
The use of starter yeasts is extensive covering white, rye, and wheat. The only other book that gives you more information about "creating" starters and sourdough is _World Sourdoughs From Antiquity_ .
The design of the book is pretty simple. Description of ingredients in detail; tools used; yeasts, starters and sourdoughs; recipes which are broken down by which type of starter used. The recipes themselves are broken into multi-day sections so that the process is more clear. Example would be the challah which is a 2 day bread. The steps themselves don't take that long but you learn the value of planning.
In essence to get something close to your favorite artisan bread you must spend time and a certain amount of patience. This book is quite honest about that and does not use shortcuts at the expense of the quality.
But what about the bread? It is good. Sometimes not as picture perfect but even the "failures" have been tasty.
A must for the baker's library. A wealth of information and interesting recipes too. Not bad for a book that is 251 pages (not counting sources and index).

Phenomenal book for the obsessed

This book is an unbelievable text for the already experienced bread baker who wants to take his/her skills to another level. Ms. Silverton is arguably the country's greatest baker, and it is her obsession with baking the perfect loaf of bread that permeates this text (note the 20+ pages of instructions for the first loaf in the book). She has spent an exhausting amount of time working out the minute details of each recipe, right down to the exact temperature of the ingredients, in order to create beautiful and flavorful loaves.
As a result, this book is definitely not for the beginner, nor is it for the quick baker looking for some easy recipes to make in a few hours. The quickest bread in this book takes two days to make, and many breads require three days. If you are obsessed with baking (as am I) and want to elevate your skills tremendously, then definitely buy this beautiful and easy-to-read book. If you're a beginner baker or someone just looking for some quick recipes for dinner, don't purchase this paean to the perfect loaf.
