Questions of Perception: Phenomenology of Architecture, by Steven Holl, Juhani Pallasmaa, Alberto Perez-Gomez

This new edition of Questions of Perception brings back into print one of the most important architectural theory treatise of recent years. Authored by noted architectural scholars Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Juhani Pallasmaa as well as the preeminent architect Steven Holl, the three separate essays are thematically linked: each one tries to explain the role human perception and phenomenological experience play in architecture. In particular, Holl -- who was named by Time magazine as the most important architect of his generation and the designer of the much-lauded Chapel of St. Ignatius at Seattle University and the highly anticipated Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art addition -- lucidly explicates the importance of intuition in the construction and experience of built space. Holl explains his search for phenomenological experience thus: "To open architecture to questions of perception, we must suspend disbelief, disengage the rational half of the mind, and simply play and explore. Reason and skepticism must yield to a horizon of discovery."

Interesting concept, but scattered content
By Margulies Perruzzi Architects
The book is a combination of three articles. The first article, Architectural Space: Meaning as Presence and Representation, is by Alberto Perez-Gomez. The second article, Architecture of the Seven Senses, is by Juhani Pallasmaa, and the third article by Steven Holl is titled Questions of Perception: The Phenomenology of Architecture. The articles were originally published in the Architecture and Urbanism periodical in July of 1994, and were recently published into a separate book by William Stout Publishers.

The first article, Architectural Space: Meaning as Presence and Representation, discusses architecture in only two of its sixteen pages. The article is very dense and must be read many times over to be able to grasp what the author is trying to say. Gomez begins with a story about how architecture and language were created simultaneously with the invention of fire, arguing "This architectural action was an act of affirmation taking place in a space that was, from its inception, social, cultural and linguistic." (Gomez pg. 9) He continues to discuss art in Ancient Greece, specifically of theatre and how architecture played a role in its creation of public space. The rest of his argument tries to explain to the reader Plato's writing of space and how `mysterious' it is.

Professor Joseph Agassi wrote a book review on these articles and when writing about this first article by Gomez, Agassi strongly expresses that Gomez fails to explain Plato's writings correctly. Gomez writes as if Plato's writings of space are mysterious when in fact Plato had a strong opinion about space and what it was made up of. "According to the ancient atoms theory, the world is made up of space and particles that move in it. Plato rejected this approach, presenting his own theory but which the world is composed of matter and form, whereby space is nothing but formless matter." Agassi pg. 14) This is a mystery in itself and that is what Gomez is trying to explain but he writes nothing about fact leading the reader to believe, if they know nothing of scientific history, that Plato was a poetic writer that spoke only of space and how it is mysterious in ways we don't understand, when actually Plato had very specific ideas about what space actually is.

The second article, Architecture of the Seven Senses, discusses how all the senses are closely integrated. Pallasma argues that architecture has turned into something only for the eye, but in reality all human senses engage architecture. He argues that "We behold, touch, listen and measure the world with our entire bodily existence and the experiential world is organized and articulated around the center of the body." (Pallasma pg. 35) He continues to discuss material and their relation to the human touch, light and shadow with the relation of temperature on ones skin; he discusses how smell and sound can trigger memories of space, giving specific examples for each of these arguments. I agree with Pallasma, in that architecture is sensual. No matter who you a stone floor covered in sun is going to feel warm beneath your feet, and the touch of wood is going to feel more natural than the touch of metal.

The article starts to speculate around Pallasma's arguments of scent. He references Gaston Bachelard in the Poetics of Space claiming, "Memory and imagination remain associated." (Pallasma pg. 32) Both Bachelard and Pallasma assume that everyone will have the same experience with the same smell. Pallasma uses the example of an abandoned house and the hollow smell within, or of a shoemakers store and the images one thinks of when the odor enters their nostrils. These are the images that Pallasma remembers when he smells these odors. I agree that smell can trigger memory but it is bold of the author to assume that the same specific smells conjure up the same specific images for everyone.

The third article by Steven Holl discusses the experience of architecture and how, according to Holl, the building speaks through the silence of perceptional phenomena. Holl breaks his argument down into eleven `Phenomenal Zones' from perspective space to sound and detail. Within each zone he gives an example of his own work and ideas to strengthen each argument. These examples might all relate to his arguments but some of them belong in the realm of art rather than the realm of architecture. Holl argues "that only architecture can simultaneously awaken all the senses - all the complexities of perception;" but what about nature? All of his examples, light and shadow, water, spatiality of night are elements found in the natural environment. He continues his entire argument, based on these phenomenal zones discussing how they are found within architecture and how only in architecture can they awaken ones senses but in reality they have the same effect in nature that they do in buildings.

Holl tries to capture the reader into this sense of amazement within his own work, arguing that he has found ways to recreate perceptional phenomena within his works, this is not what I argue is wrong with his article, but that these natural phenomena are not only within architecture as he states, but are found within the wilderness of the everyday life.

Architecture, unlike other forms of art, addresses all the senses simultaneously and instantaneously, according to Holl but I agree with Joseph Agassi when he says that this is an exaggeration. Just as in Pallasmas article smell is only indirectly tied with architecture, and as Agassi points out, so is theatre as in the first article.

Joseph Agassi concludes his book review by saying the concepts the authors propose are not phenomenology and do not contribute to our understanding of architecture. As a student trying to understand perception of space through the human body I found these articles to open many doors into further exploration of human perception within the built form. Do they relate to phenomenology? Considering that there is no one straight answer to what phenomenology is, I can't say. I can say that the first article is much more philosophical relating to the idea of space than the last two articles which complement each other well explaining sensual architectural experience.

poetics, instead of polemics
By _snowcrash
Architects and students who are bored to death by OMA, MVRDV, Hadid, and the rest of the New Postmodernists will find consolation -- and inspiration -- in this book.

"Questions of Perception" was originally printed in July 1994, as a special issue of the architectural journal A+U. Back issues have been sold out for some time, and until recently, buying a used copy of the book would have set you back a couple hundred dollars. I'm very glad to see that the publishers of A+U decided to reprint these important essays.

Rather than serving as a polemical manifesto, or another boring iteration of reactionary academic theory, the authors discuss the experience of architecture on a basic psychophysiological level. Unlike the work of many of today's starchitects, this book will never seem dated, because it is focused on human constants -- the way that our minds and bodies respond to space, light, texture, color, and other architectural fundamentals. It is not a manual of style, or a collection of glossy photos for you to copy in your next project. It requires active thought. It requires an attention span. You have to absorb the meaning of the writings, not just look at computer renderings with copy+pasted supermodel silhouettes. It has nothing to do with urbanism, globalism, terrorism, or any of the other "isms" that hopeless, clueless, talentless academics increasingly try to link to the building and construction industry. Instead, it's a quiet reflection on the ways that buildings (and natural environments) shape our daily experiences. Even though 13 years have passed since these essays were written, they are still highly relevant for any designer who wants to infuse their work with quality and honesty.

As far as I can tell, the book's design is identical to the 1994 version, with the exception of the cover artwork. I must admit that $50 is a bit pricey for a book that is so plainly printed and bound. Regardless, it's better than paying a couple hundred dollars for a used copy of the original. And, all things considered, it's only a few dollars more than something like S,M,L,XL. So if you're tired of pretentious, pedantic academese, and you're ready to read something with permanence and substance, do yourself a favor and buy "Questions of Perception" instead.

Pizza Is the Best Breakfast: (And Other Lessons I've Learned), by Allison Gutknecht

When a visit from Mandy’s cousin turns out to be more frustrating than fun, the girls discover that they just might cook up a solution in the kitchen in this sweet and spirited story.

Mandy Berr is super excited that her favorite cousin in the whole world, Paige, is coming to visit. After all, Mandy is usually stuck at home with the twins and annoying little brother, Timmy, so the chance for some fun girl time is definitely worthy of many “wahoos!”

But when Paige arrives, she is not the fun cousin that Mandy remembers. To start, Paige wants to call her “Manda,” with no “y.” She no longer likes Rainbow Sparkle, their favorite TV show. She doesn’t want to bounce on the bed or play dress-up. And, in the ultimate betrayal, Paige actually likes hanging out with the twins and Timmy. Mandy does not like these changes one bit.

To try and help bring the girls together, their grandma suggests the girls make some recipes out of a special cookbook—if they can work together, she will take them to a carnival at the end of the week. But having two bosses in the kitchen isn’t working out, and it looks like Mandy's visit with Paige is about to go up in smoke. Can the two cousins clear the air and whip up a fancy meal for the family?

Pizza Is the Best Breakfast CHAPTER 1 Glue Stick Stickup

IT IS NOT MY FAULT that there is chocolate pudding in Timmy’s hair.

Mom says that it is my fault, of course. She thinks that just because I pulled the pudding cup away from Timmy, and it squirted on his face when I squeezed it, that this whole chocolate pudding thing is my problem.

But I promise that it is not.

“You said I cannot eat pudding for breakfast,” I tell Mom, still holding the almost-empty pudding cup in my hand. She lifts Timmy onto the counter to sit and begins running a wet paper towel down his bangs.

“You can’t,” Mom answers.

“But Timmy was,” I point out. “And that is not allowed.”

“You’re right, that’s not allowed,” Mom says. “But you had no business grabbing the cup away from him like that. You should’ve just told me.”

“Then you would have called me a tattletale,” I tell her, which I think is a pretty good point.

Mom sighs an enormous gust of breath—so enormous that the tippy-top of Timmy’s hair blows a little from her nose wind.

“Timmy should not have been eating pudding for breakfast—do you hear that, Timmy?” Mom lifts his chin up to face her, and he nods his head, even though he is still licking chocolate from his lips. “But, Mandy, you did not have to intervene. Next time—and there better not be a next time, Timmy—just come get me.”

“So I should tattletale.”

“Mandy,” Mom says with a warning in her voice. “Enough.”

When Mom’s back is turned, I stick my longest finger inside the pudding cup and swoop up the last bite. Then I drop the cup onto the counter, because I am not cleaning up a three-year-old’s trash. No way!

“Mandy eat pudding,” I hear Timmy call then, and I whirl around on my heel to face him. He is pointing at me as Mom wrings his hair into wet tangles. “Mandy eat pudding too. I saw.”

“Worry about yourself, Timmy,” Mom says. “And, Mandy, throw that pudding cup away for me, please.” I pick the cup back up in my hand and stomp toward the trash can, and I wiggle my finger through the pudding one more time, just to swipe up the last of it, before I toss it in the garbage.

“You’re welcome, Timmy,” I call, and he does not even say thank you for throwing out his trash, which I think is rude. I am pretty sure that if Timmy had to throw out my trash after I ate pudding for breakfast, I would have had to say thank you, so I stick my tongue out at him.

“Okay, I think it’s all out now,” Mom says, and she grunts as she hoists Timmy off the counter. But I think she should have left the pudding in his hair, because then at least the front of it would have been brown like mine. Not that I would like to look like Timmy, but I also do not like that he gets to have blond hair and I do not. At least the pudding would have made things even.

“You’re going to be late for your bus, Mand,” Mom says as she rinses her hands off in the sink.

“Mandy,” I correct her.

“I know your name, silly,” Mom says. “Mand is just short for Mandy. It’s affectionate.”

“I do not like it,” I tell her.

“I thought you didn’t like Amanda.”

“I do not like that, either,” I say. “I like Mandy. With a y. The y is the best part.”

“You have a lot of rules, you know that?” Mom says, and she kisses the top of my head. “Skedaddle. Your bus will be here in two minutes. Remember your jacket. And be careful of the twins on your way out, please.”

I trot out of the kitchen and Timmy calls “Bye, Mandy!” after me, but I do not answer him. The twins are lying on the living room carpet like blobs, looking at mobiles. I hold my nose as I step over them, because one of them always seems to stink like a dirty diaper.

I grab my book bag and open the front door before I remember.

“When is Paige coming?” I call to Mom.

“Tonight,” she yells back.

“But what time?” Paige is my favorite cousin in the whole world, and I haven’t seen her since last Christmas, which I think is way too long.

“After dinner. Grandmom is going to pick her up at Uncle Rich’s house this afternoon,” Mom tells me.

“And she is going to sleep in my room, right?” I ask. “Like a slumber party?”

“That’s the plan,” Mom answers.

“Wahoo!” I open the front door all the way and then slam it behind me, dragging my book bag along the ground as I gallop like a pony toward the bus stop.

Because if there is one thing that puts me in an excellent mood, it is Paige, because Paige is fabulous. That is her favorite word—“fabulous”—which is perfect because that is exactly what she is. Paige looks like a princess with very wavy hair and real pierced ears, and her lips are so pink that she always looks like she is wearing lipstick, even though she is not. Plus, Paige does not have any brothers or sisters, which is what I would like to have, except that sometimes I like to pretend that Paige is my sister. She would be a much better sister to have than the twin, because even though Paige is already ten years old, she never cares that I am only eight. Because I am her favorite cousin too, just like she is mine.

And favorite cousins are absolutely the best kind to have visit you.

“Psst.” I lean against my desk and hiss at Dennis. “Psst, Freckle Face.” I tap on the edge of his desk, which is now right next to mine. This is Mrs. Spangle’s way of making sure that Dennis and I get along more than we argue with each other.

I do not think this plan is working out so well.

“What?” Dennis runs his hand over the top of his Mohawk. We are supposed to be creating maps of our neighborhoods with construction paper, but Dennis doesn’t seem to be doing much more than petting his own hair.

Though I have always wondered what the top of a Mohawk would feel like, if I am being honest.

“Are you done?” I point to his paper, which looks even worse than the artwork Timmy makes in preschool.

“Yeah.”

“Can I use your glue stick?” I whisper. “Mine ran out.” I screw up the bottom of the stick all the way so Dennis can see that it’s empty.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I said so, Polka Dot,” Dennis says.

“But it’s right there.” I point to his glue stick, which is lying next to scraps of multicolored construction paper. “You didn’t even put the cap on. It’s going to dry up if you don’t let me use it.”

“Too bad for you,” Dennis says, and he thumps his head on his desk and pretends to nap. I look toward Mrs. Spangle, and she has her own head buried in her bottom desk drawer, digging through her handbag. I peer over the side of Dennis’s desk until I can see his face, and he has his eyes closed, ignoring me.

So I reach very slowly around his head, and I lift his glue stick with the very tips of my fingers. Careful not to create any breeze near his Mohawk, I pull my arm back as gently as possible. Success! I pump a silent fist in the air, still clutching Dennis’s glue stick, and that’s when I see Natalie staring at me.

I pull my other hand across my mouth and then stretch my lips tight, as if I had just zipped them closed, and Natalie nods her head to show she understands that she shouldn’t say one thing. Natalie is almost like a real friend ever since she helped me hide Mom’s red lipstick on Picture Day. Not like a best friend, like Anya is, but she is okay sometimes.

I use Dennis’s glue stick to finish putting together my map, and I think about returning it to his desktop before he notices. But Dennis didn’t even let me use his glue stick in the first place, so I don’t think he deserves to have it back, at least not yet. I grab the cap from where it is resting just above his Mohawk, place it on the stick, and put it in my own desk. Then I place my empty stick by Dennis’s head.

“I like how nicely you’ve all been working on your maps,” Mrs. Spangle says as she stands. “Anything you don’t have completed can be wrapped up after recess—you’ll all have five minutes to finish. Right now, though, let me see whose group is ready to line up for lunch.”

I fold my hands neatly on my desk and sit up super-duper straight, just like Natalie always does. Dennis still has his head resting on his desk, and he is going to ruin it for our whole team. “Psst, Freckle Face.” I try to kick him under our desks, but I can’t reach. “Wake up.”

“I am up,” Dennis says, but he still does not lift his head, which means Mrs. Spangle is never going to call us to line up first. I stop sitting super-duper straight, since Dennis is wrecking it for our whole group anyway, and instead, I rustle through my desk until I find my sticker book. Anya and I, and sometimes Natalie, have been collecting stickers and trading them, but mine are some of the prettiest, I think. My favorite kinds of stickers are filled with gel, and when you press them, the gel spreads out and looks glittery. I even traded most of my Rainbow Sparkle stickers for Anya’s gel ones, because that is how much I love them.

“Mandy and Dennis, I’ll wait,” Mrs. Spangle says, so I place my sticker book on my lap and fold my hands again on top of my desk. Dennis places his chin on his hands but still doesn’t lift his head.

“Sit up!” I whisper-yell at him, and he does, but not even super-duper straight like he is supposed to.

“Okay, Mandy’s group,” Mrs. Spangle finally announces. “You can grab your things from the cubbies and get in line.” I stand and hold my sticker book up in Anya’s direction to make sure she has hers too, and she nods at me. Then I scramble to grab my lunch box and get in line as quickly as I can so I won’t be all the way in the back, because Dennis always likes to be the caboose. And there is no way I want Dennis to ruin my appetite today.

*  *  *

“Why’d you steal Dennis’s glue stick?” Natalie asks me when we reach our table in the cafeteria.

“I didn’t steal it, I took it,” I explain.

“Isn’t that the same thing?”

I think about this for one second. “No, because if I stole it, I can never give it back, like when Dennis stole my gummy bears and ate them all. If I took it, I can give it back. I just don’t want to yet.”

Natalie nods her head like this makes sense, and I am a very good explainer, I think.

I whip my sticker book onto the table and open to the center page, which has all of my favorite gel stickers in a row. “Aren’t they beautiful?” I ask.

“They are,” Natalie agrees. “My mom said she would take me to the teacher store and look for more stickers this weekend.” Teacher stores are one of the best places for getting stickers, because teachers like to buy them almost as much as we do. I have never been to a teacher store, even though I have wanted to go to one my whole entire life. Mom says we do not have to go there because no one in our house is a teacher, but Mom doesn’t understand important things like sticker collecting.

“I wonder if Paige has any stickers she would trade,” I begin. “Did I tell you she is coming tonight?”

“Only like a thousand times,” Anya answers. “I know, you’re excited.”

“Who’s Paige?” Natalie asks.

“Her cousin,” Anya answers for me. “Her favorite cousin.” She drags out the word “favorite” and wiggles her head back and forth as she says it.

“Why is she your favorite?” Natalie asks.

“Because she is fabulous. That is Paige’s favorite word, you know—‘fabulous.’ And that is what she is,” I tell her.

“But what makes her so fabulous?” Natalie asks.

“She has wavy hair that looks just like a yellow ocean,” I explain. “And she wears boots with little heels that click-clack on the floor. And she has more Rainbow Sparkle stuff than anyone in the universe, and she always draws a heart in her name above the i. Oh, and she does not have any brothers or sisters, and that is what I want to have.”

“You mean that’s what you don’t want to have?” Natalie asks, and sometimes I wish Natalie would stop listening so much to everything I say, so I sigh an enormous breath at her.

“You know what I mean,” I tell her. “Or maybe I would take Paige as my sister. That would be good too.”

“Why is she visiting?” Natalie asks.

“Her school is on vacation,” I explain. “She will be here for one whole week.”

“You’re lucky to have a cousin your age,” Anya tells me. “All of my cousins are very old. Like, teenagers.” And I nod because I agree that I am lucky.

But if I could, I would definitely trade in Timmy and the twins to have Paige as my sister. Then I would be the luckiest girl of all.

Allison Gutknecht has one of the best chapter book writers I've ever read
By Stephanie Faris
Allison Gutknecht has one of the best chapter book writers I've ever read. She captures the voice of an eight-year-old girl perfectly. Pizza Is the Best Breakfast: (And Other Lessons I've Learned) is every bit as awesome as the other books in the series but if you haven't read the others, I recommend you start with Don't Wear Polka-Dot Underwear with White Pants: (And Other Lessons I've Learned) and read all of them in order. You'll love Mandy and all her misadventures, I promise!

Mandy Berr is best!
By Lynne
From my 8 year old daughter - I liked that this is a book about teamwork. At first there was a problem and Mandy tried to make Paige jealous but that didn't get them anywhere. Then they had to use teamwork to go to something they both wanted. I liked that they had to use teamwork to get what they wanted. I liked that cousins can be friends and work together. I recommend this book to any kids who love a good story and love learning skills in a different way.

Knights of The Order: A History of Kappa Alpha Order at The Citadel 1883-2013, by Thomas Dewey Wise

This is the history of Theta chapter of Kappa Alpha Order that was established at The Citadel in 1883. It operated sub rosa, initiating cadets quietly for 7 years until banned completely in 1890. Later in the 1920-1924 time period, a small group of men were initiated making a total of 62 in all. It turned out that these 62 men were a very accomplished group in later life to include, college presidents, generals, legislators, bankers, judges and lawyers. In 2008, Kappa Alpha Order established Theta Commission at The Citadel. As a commission, as opposed to a chapter, it initiates only graduates. From five members in 2008 to nearly 300 in 2013, Theta Commission has grown dramatically. Theta Commission counts as members two former presidents of The Citadel, several three star generals, several members of the school's Board of Visitors, former Congressmen, retired Bishops and parish priests. It is a highly distinguished group. The book explores fraternity life inside a military environment through reports of the chapter secretary addressed to the Kappa Alpha Journal. It describes the battles between the Greeks(fraternity men) and the Barbarians( non-fraternity men) for leadership of school committees and social events. There were a total of five fraternities existing in a sub rosa environment at The Citadel during this period. The narrative points out the obvious incompatibility of fraternities with a military environment. Fraternity activity at The Citadel is a little known footnote in the rich history of the South Carolina Military Academy.

From a reader and friend of the author
By Paul Hines
A well written and copiously researched book with many excellent photographs which will be of primary interest to those who belonged at any time to Greek Letter organizations at The Citadel, which the author attended, with particular reference to the Kappa Alpha Order or fraternity. Not of general interest except perhaps for Charlestonians whose family members belonged at some point in the organization's history. I read the entire book, however, and admire the author for his diligence with an arcane subject.! Judysgardn

Love, Curse, & Hocus Pocus (Indonesian Edition), by Karla M. Nashar

Sinopsis: Metropop: Love, Hate & Hocus Pocus Hate at first sight. The Most Eligible Bachelor in Indonesia. Metropop: Love, Curse & Hocus Pocus “And what would you do, if I told you I have no intention to kiss you?” Cring... cring... cring... Beware!

Great for CCNA or other Enterprise folks.. for hobbyists, umm...
By Leo of BORG
Upshot: And you may find yourself...in a machine room or data center. You will need this book. Pros: If you just passed your CCNA exam, or have started working with enterprise level Cisco kit, there's a lot here for you. Cons: If you DON'T work with Cisco kit, why are you here?

For anyone not acquainted with data-centers & network operations, this book shows you how the other hardware half lives. When the author says `you should have passed the CCNA' he's very serious. There are NO EXPLANATIONS of basic Cisco terms. If you are not versed in TCP/IP and SOME Cisco kit, you will be spending a LOT of time in Google. And probably asking yourself why you bought this book.

Those cautions aside, there are gems of `best practices' for non Cisco or smaller network techs here: Amid the Cisco jargon you will find practical advice even for your small business or SOHO LAN, like in Ch. 27 `Basic Firewall Theory', or Chapter 29 on different flavors of 802.11x WiFi and how to secure it. The author even introduces IPv6, with one of the most straightforward explanations I've read yet.

But what really makes this book worth it are the backstories & practical advice from a veteran to new engineers on how to handle failure scenarios as well as the politics involved in maintaining large networks.

In fact, everything from Chapter 39 (`Failure'), Chapter 40 (`GAD's Maxims') to Chapter 41 (`Avoiding Frustration') would be welcome in any IT, infosec or dev reference.

In short, I would somewhat recommend this book for non-CCNA folks interested in Network Engineering or Infrastructure. But I would highly recommend Network Warrior for the audience for which it was intended.

Disclosure: I received the eBook download from O'Reilly for review purposes. I'm not a CCNA but have been around.

Second edition does not disappoint
By Scott
If you walk into any networking geeks secret lair and scan your eyes along the endless horizon of nerdomenclature, you'll undoubtedly find Gary Donahue's original Networking Warrior somewhere pressed up against a vast collection of Cisco Press, Sybex, O'Reilly and occasional Max Brooks literature. From the beginning Gary Donahue's masterpiece has been widely accepted as thee' post CCNA book for every Cisco guy since 2007. As the unofficial go to manual for everything untaught on the CCNA a Cisco network engineer needs to know, Gary has taken his place among the elite masters Cisco authors such as Jeff Doyle, Wendell Odom, Jeremy Cioara and David Hucaby just to name a few.

Networking Warrior Second Edition has updated it's core example technologies to reflect the ever evolving industry we as network engineers work with on a daily bassis. Giving us operational examples on Cisco new cutting edge equipment including the Cisco ASA Firewalls 8.0+ IOS, 3750 & 6500 switches and even the super-cool new Nexis product line emerging from the dark shadows intending to over the world one packet at a time. Gary takes his time at the end of each applicable chapter to explain the differences of implementing each technology though the IOS, CatIOS and new Nexus NX-OS giving clear examples that are easy to follow doubling this book as an excellent field manual alongside the extremely popular Portable Command Guides published by Cisco Press.

What make book unique from most publishing's is Gary's sparkling humor scatted throughout his writings. One moment he will be explaining the technical aspect of the subject, the next he'll be making a metaphor funny enough to make your Spouse look over your shoulder and ask "whats so funny?", and after the fourth or fifth time may or may not be a good thing. Even though this book flows very well, it is not without it's fresh off the print edition errors. There are areas in the text where examples have not been updated to reflect the new books updated example equipment, other areas have diagram abnormalities, but we're not here to judge Gary's wife's editorial skills. I'm sure it's hared enough just to put up with him (joking of course).

Garry mentions and gives a great amount credit to his wife as being his front line editor though the many months involved in writing this book.

Networking Warrior spans an impressive 41 chapters covering a slue of topics. Just holding this book in your hands and thumbing though the chapter indexes gives you an idea of just how much Gary covers. I'd like to say this book is an excellent cover to cover read, and in some major blocks it is, but there are some section that no matter how supper-geek status you give yourself you'll just find yourself over inundated with information or lack of understanding, especially if you're fresh off the CCNA boat. The clear cut and skinny on this book is: If you're a CCNA looking for the next step, or a networking nut wanting to freshen up your knowledge of Cisco solutions you're in for a treat. Because Gary Donahue has everything but gift wrapped you the next book to fill that empty slot on your bookshelf. If is, if it ever gets off your desk.

Should be on the shelf of every IT pro!
By Michael Dragone
Network Warrior is one of those books that every IT pro should have. I actually ordered an additional copy of this book to keep at home as when I first received it I was taking it to and from the office.

I recommend it to anyone who is not only getting started in networking, but also for anyone who is an IT "jack of all trades," as it's impossible to remember all the little command nuances or the real world best practices of a technology if you don't use it every day.

When I need to do something networking-related that I haven't done in a while, I usually look in this book first. For example, I know tomorrow I'm going to be setting up an old Catalyst 3550 as a multilayer switch for a project. I haven't set up an SVI in at least a year. I know I need to put a "no switchport" command in somewhere. I know I could search online for it, but then there's always Network Warrior!
